IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS NOTICE - REQUIRED BY LAW

Notice to Parents and Guardians about School-Required Immunizations

July 13, 2020

Dear Parent or Guardian:

As we plan a potential return to part-time or full-time in-person classroom instruction in the fall, we would like to remind you to make sure your student is up to date on required immunizations (vaccines) before coming to school. Immunization rates in Contra Costa County have fallen to dangerously low levels during COVID-19 shelter-in-place, leaving children and others vulnerable to vaccine-preventable diseases such as whooping cough, measles, and others.

Per California School Immunization Law, newly admitted students and transfers for all grades, including transitional kindergarten, need to show documentation by August 11, 2020, that they have received the following vaccines:

Students admitted at Transitional Kindergarten/Kindergarten through 12th-grade need:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP, DTP, Tdap, or Td) — 5 doses
  • Polio (OPV or IPV) — 4 doses (3 doses OK if one was given on or after 4th birthday)
  • Hepatitis B — 3 doses (Not required for 7th-grade entry)
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) — 2 doses (Both given on or after 1st birthday)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) — 2 doses

In addition, students starting 7th-grade need:

  • Tetanus Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) —1 dose (Whooping cough booster is usually given at 11 years and up)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) — 2 doses

Students entering TK/K through 8th grade who do not meet the immunization requirements above will not be able to attend school until they are up to date, per state law. In addition, your child’s provider may recommend additional vaccines.

Please contact your child’s doctor right away about these vaccines. Clinics may have limited appointments available due to social distancing policies.
