Announcement from the MSD Reopening School Task Force

June 14, 2020

The MSD presented a reopening school overview to the MSD Governing Board on June 9.  The PowerPoint presented to the Governing Board can be found HERE

The MSD Leadership Team, comprised of administrators and directors, developed a draft reopening school plan to serve as a foundation for the recently established MSD Reopening School Task Force.

The purpose of the Task Force is to plan for the reopening of school per at least three scenarios: 1) all students return to school, 2) all students remain at home and instruction is presented via distance learning, and, 3) a blended or hybrid reopening where some students come to school on specific days and instruction is presented via distance learning on other days.

The Task Force held its first meeting on Friday, June 12, 2020, and organized members into seven subcommittees to more fully develop the draft reopening plan, and to do so by 6/26.  Each subcommittee will present initial plans for feedback to the Task Force on June 30.  Feedback from the June 30 meeting will be discussed and addressed in preparation for the July 7 Task Force meeting.  The presentation of subcommittee plans and the solicitation of feedback will occur again and in preparation for the July 14 Task Force meeting. The Task Force will present its recommendations to the Governing Board at a special Governing Board meeting planned for July 21.

The seven Task Force subcommittees are Safety - Public Health; Safety - Social/Emotional; Instructional Models; Staffing; Equity/Access; Childcare and Operations/Governance.

Task Force members include: Janelle Chng, Governing Board; Jon Nickens, Governing Board; Lisa Brown, MEF/Parent; Dr. Paul Espinas, Parent; Dr. Rebecca Parish, Parent; Casey Sproul, Parent; Stefanie Galizia, Parent; Tina Weber, Parent; Kimberly Prast, Parent; Gita Kesiraju, Parent; Olivia Flint, School Psychologist/Parent; Kim Lockett, Teacher - JM; Suzanne Tom, Teacher - Lower Elem; Leann Nixdorff, Teacher/Parent – JM; Karlene Steelman, Teacher/Parent - JM; Angie Guidi, Teacher - Lower Elem; Shaun Paul, Teacher - TK; Sekai Greer, Teacher/Parent - Upper Elem; Shannon Ross, Computer Lab Coordinator/Parent; Joan Danilson, Administration; Chris Reddam, Administration; David Lanuza, Administration; Bruce Burns, Administration; Brian Sullivan, Administration/Parent; Stephanie Richards, Administration; Annette Herbert, Classified; Bess Inzeo, Counselor/Parent; Lynne Wilson, Director of Childcare; Sean Andersen, Director of Maintenance and Grounds; Jennifer Baier, District Office.

The Friday, June 12, 2020, Task Force meeting was a planning and organizational meeting where process was presented, subcommittee tasks were explained, and members selected one or more subcommittees to serve.

While the Task Force will rely on a number of resources to fully develop plans, a primary document guiding plans to reopen school is titled “Stronger Together: A Guidebook for the Safe Reopening of California's Public Schools”.  “Stronger Together”  was developed in consultation with the California Department of Education, the California Department of Public Health, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, school labor and management representatives, California school districts, and officials from other states.

Following each meeting, the MSD will send parents and staff a communication with an update on progress.
