One District One Book begins 4/27
Posted 4/21/20

MSD’s First Annual One District, One Book

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Starting Monday, April 27, the Moraga School District will be embarking on an all district book club called One District, One Book. We will all be reading – Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. During this time of separation and isolation we hope your family can participate in this special activity over the next several weeks.

With the One District, One Book  program, we aim to build a community of readers across the Moraga School District. Everyone - students, parents, staff, and administrative staff - may participate, and we can all reap the many benefits.

The reading is meant to be a read aloud activity for the family. Starting on April 27 families will follow THIS reading schedule so that we are all on the same pace. We will also post podcasts of each “reading” that can be accessed on the Moraga School District Distance Learning homepage. This is a fun way to listen to the “chapters” read by special guest readers.

Each day your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive, aggressive listening. You will find links to these questions and fun ways to respond using Flip Grid (password = Wishtree) on the Moraga School District Distance Learning homepage. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child can feel included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about Wishtree.

One District, One Book is a novel program in that children at all grade levels will be reading/listening to the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. And we also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood and enjoyed by younger students, while still captivating and stimulating older children.

The goal is to have one book for each family. In a “typical year” our PTAs would purchase these books. This year we are hoping that you either purchase your own book (hard copy or ebook) by our start date of April 27.  If you are not able to purchase a book you can always listen to our nightly read aloud podcasts. You can also support local book sellers by purchasing at Bel and Bunna's in Lafayette or Orinda Books.

Have fun and enjoy this fun way of coming together around a book while we are all apart. With your help, we can build a community of readers across Moraga. We are all in this together!
