Front Circle EARTH DAY Planting: On Saturday, April 22nd we will need parent and student volunteers to help beautify our front circle by planting new plants!  We plan to start at 9am.  Volunteers are welcome any time throughout the day (planting should be finished by early afternoon).  Please bring your own shovels/tools.

 

CAASPP Testing: Each May 3rd-5th grade students take the CAASPP test. This test assess students in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The state uses the results of these tests as one factor in determining our progress as a school and district. Here is a link to the testing schedule. If a child is absent during a testing session he/she has to miss class time to make-up the missed session. Attendance on these days is important.

 

Class Placement

The CP team spends a lot of time working on classroom placement for next year. Our main goal when building classes is to create balanced classes. Balancing classes requires us to look at many variables such as: students that need extra support, academic progress, peer relationships, etc. I work on this process with each grade level twice in May. During this process we build balanced classes and I place each class with a specific teacher.

 

If you feel that your child has a unique situation or need that I need to be aware of during this careful placement process please send me an email by 4/28/2017. These requests should not be made through the teacher. Requests for a specific teacher will not be granted. Please know that your request will be considered within the larger context of balancing classes.
 

Drop Off/Pick Up Safety Reminders

Please make our drop off and pick up as SAFE, easy, and quick as possible by follow these simple and important guidelines:

  • Pull forward: pull as far into the loop as possible to allow other cars to pull in behind you.

  • Children must exit the vehicle on the curb side onl

  • Driver must remain in vehicle while in the loop

  • Pull away immediately

  • Do not park in the numbered spots in the parking lot

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! - Too Good For Drugs Program

Drug-awareness education is included in the 4th/5th grade Health Education Standards.  Traditionally, parents have taken an active role in presenting these lessons to students, in coordination with the classroom teacher.  Again this year, we need parent support!  

We are seeking parent volunteers to teach the Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) Curriculum in our 4th and 5th grade classrooms.    The curriculum is fully developed, including lesson plans and all materials.  You do not need to be a parent of a 4th or 5th grader to participate. Also, training is provided so that parents feel confident about presenting, along with management support from the classroom teacher. This is truly a great opportunity to get into the classrooms and support student leaning.  

 

The TGFD curriculum has been recently updated to include more games, interaction, and real-life problem-solving situations (social media, peer pressure, etc.) to make the lessons more engaging for students.  The curriculum consists of 8 – 10 lessons, delivered over approximately 2 weeks in individual classrooms.  

If you are interested in getting involved with CP’s TGFD program, please contact Principal Chris Reddam at creddam@moraga.k12.ca.us  by Tuesday, April 25.  A parent training will be scheduled for May 2nd, so that classroom lessons can be delivered during the month of May.   

 

Night Under the Big Top - Father/Daughter Dance

School Site Council (SSC) is made up of 7 parents and 7 teachers. The purpose of SSC is to help create, monitor, and approve the Camino Pablo Site Plan. The SSC has five meetings a year. Meetings are at CP and last from 3:15-4:30. This a great way to be involved in planning and goal setting that directly supports our amazing students. 5th-12th Music Concerts: Come listen to our 5th graders make music! This week, 5th through 12th grade Moraga musicians from all three elementary schools, JM Intermediate School, and Campo High School will gather together to perform for the community.  All concerts are FREE and will be held at the Campolindo High School Performing Arts Center, beginning at 7:00 p.m.   Attend one or more as follows:

  • Tuesday, March 28 – Choir Night

  • Wednesday, March 29 – Strings Night

  • Thursday, March 30 – Band Night

 

Friday, March 31 = Minimum Day:

  • TK/K All Early - 8:25 to 11:50

Mother/Son Dodgeball Thank You! This was a fun night. Thank you to Stephanie and Matt Helder and all the other parent volunteers who helped make this a fun and safe event.

 

Math Competition: Did you know that on Thursday, March 16th, twenty Camino Pablo students competed in a math competition called Math Kangaroo. It was great to see so many students excited about math. Thank you to David Harrison and the other volunteers that helped make this competition happen. We plan to the host the competition again next year.

One School, One Book Assemblies: Due to the multiple night events the last week of March we will not be having a family celebration for our One School, One Book program. However, we will holding an assembly to conclude our reading of the One and Only Ivan. During the assembly I will read the last section, we will have some discussion about the book, and watch some videos about the real Ivan. Parents are welcome to attend. The assemblies will be on Friday, March 31:

MEF 35th Anniversary Dinner: The official results will be announced soon, but the Moraga community came together Saturday night and raised a lot of money for our students. A huge thank you to all MEF volunteers who helped make this event come to life!

 

Thank You CP for Making the Read-a-thon a Success!

CP students are amazing readers!  We raised $8,524.60 for the Camino Pablo PTA.  These funds will support our One School, One Book program as well as many other PTA programs.  Special congratulations to the 4 classes that had 100% participation (Adler, Brown, Nixdorff, and Robinson).  

CP families also donated over 1000 books to Super Stars Literacy, an early literacy intervention program that supports at-risk early elementary students.  

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Adrianne Spencer and Jennifer Burke.

Front Circle Landscaping

Notice some work being done at the entrance to our school?  We are excited to begin implementing our landscaping project to revise and beautify this area of the school.  Funds raised from last year's Read-a-thon were approved to implement this exciting project which broke ground over the weekend.  It is being headed by talented CP parent and landscaping professional, Laura Osteen.  This project will include large moss rock boulders, native and drought tolerant plants and a live oak tree all carefully selected to incorporate Moraga's natural rural habitat and provide low maintenance plants to add seasonal interest along with a habitat for native birds and butterfly.  We are hoping to make this a community project where students can help plant flowers and parents can gift their time and talents in a variety of areas.  We will also seek your input on a new school sign as the one we have is deteriorating.  Be on the lookout for additional updates and ways to help.

 

Moraga iKind Movie “Bully” - Attention Parents: Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. The documentary film BULLY, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, brings human scale to this startling statistic, offering an intimate, unflinching look at how bullying has touched five kids and their families.  The Moraga iKind Project invites you to attend a special showing of the movie "Bully" on March 22, at 7:00 PM at the JM auditorium.  JM 8th grade students will share their school experiences with the audience following the movie.  JM Principal Joan Danilson and Superintendent Bruce Burns will also be present to answer questions. Free pizza will be served from 630 to 6:55.  RSVP at http://moragaikind.eventbrite.com/

Thank You Family Game Night Volunteers: Family game night was a success. Families had a chance to build, play and learn together. A special thank you to Kelly Rossi and all the other parent volunteers that made this night a reality.

 

Odyssey of the Mind - Kinder Power!: Six CP students competed in the SF Bay Area Odyssey of the Mind 2017 Regional Tournament this past Saturday. The kids, and their parent coaches, worked so hard and came up with a wonderful solution to the Primary Division problem of "Movin' Out" and WON (a thirteen-way tie for) FIRST PLACE!!.

One School, One Book: Starting tomorrow, February 27, the entire CP community will be reading the same book for a program called One School, One Book. This book will be introduced to students at an assembly on 2/27. Each student will bring home his/her own copy (thank you PTA) and a reading calendar on this day. With this program we aim to build a community of readers. Everyone - students, parents, staff - will be participating.

Generally, you will be asked to read a "chapter" a night (about 15 minutes). This is meant to be a family read aloud experience. We will also put links to podcasts of each "chapter" in the school website. This is a fun way to listen to the "chapter" read by a CP staff member.

In school your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions. We hope you enjoy!

Invent It! FREE Family Game Night THIS Wednesday, March 1st, 6-7:45pm

CP's Family Game & Math Night is scheduled for Wed, March 1st, from 6-7:45pm in CP's Multi-Use Room. Bring the whole family for a fun night playing games, inventing new things and more.  This year's theme is "Invent It!",  brought to us by the Lawrence Hall of Science. Free to attend (sponsored by the PTA) & appropriate for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult (no drop-offs, please).

CP SPELLING BEE 2017: On Friday CP held our annual 3rd-5th grade spelling bee. After over 15 rounds and 90 minutes fourth grader Clara H. was crowned the winner and Emilia B. was runner up. All 18 contestants and 9 alternates did a wonderful job representing their classes and working at home to studying words and strategy. Clara will go on to represent CP at the Contra Costa County Spelling Bee on March 27th at the Tice Valley Community Center. A special thank you to Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. Nixdorff for being judges and Angel Clifford and Tami Shaffer for being our parent volunteer spelling bee coordinators.

SUPPORT MORAGA’S ALL ACCESS PLAYGROUND: The Rotary Club of Moraga announced this week that it has reached 70% of its goal to raise just over $250,000 in donations for the new Lamorinda All-Access Playground.

The club has now raised $175,000 from the community, local corporations and foundations and its own club members since beginning the fundraising drive in early October.

Coordinating Council: This long-standing MSD committee has evolved from reviewing supplemental district programs to developing and overseeing the implementation of the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan), the District’s road map to the future.  In other words, this committee decides the overarching direction and focus for our schools.

 

School Safety Committee: This committee has had a great influence state-wide on the way safety concerns (specifically child-abuse reporting) are handled at the school level.  Currently, the Safety Committee develops and monitors MSD’s Comprehensive Student Safety Plan, which includes issues such as emergency preparedness, digital citizenship and campus security.

 

Student Wellness:  This committee was established in the fall of 2016 and is charged with ensuring that schools are in compliance with our district’s “Wellness” board policy.  Anticipated work of this committee will include how we address the physical, social, and emotional health of our students.

SUPPORT MORAGA’S ALL ACCESS PLAYGROUND: The Rotary Club of Moraga announced this week that it has reached 70% of its goal to raise just over $250,000 in donations for the new Lamorinda All-Access Playground.

The club has now raised $175,000 from the community, local corporations and foundations and its own club members since beginning the fundraising drive in early October.

WHAT ARE THE TEACHERS DOING TODAY?

All TK – 5th grade teachers will meet with MSD Writers’ Workshop Consultants in the morning to calibrate student writing. This work provides teachers a way to reflect on their instruction and differentiate their instruction based on student need.  

 

In the afternoon, teachers will choose from a menu of workshops presented by specialists on such topics as “Handwriting and Fine Motor Interventions” to “Assistive Technology Tools for Writers in the Classroom.”

SPELLING BEE: The Camino Pablo 3rd-5th Camino Pablo Spelling Bee is on February 3rd at 8:30. Last week each 3rd-5th class held a classroom bee. Each participating classroom puts forward two contestants and one alternate. Between now and the bee there will be two Friday practice sessions during lunch and one dress rehearsal on January 27th. The winner of the bee will move on to the county competition in March.

 

CELEBRATE MORAGA EDUCATION FOUNDATION’S (MEF) BIRTHDAY!!: MEF is celebrating it’s 35th anniversary this year with an "Under the City Lights" Auction & Dinner Dance to be held at the Claremont on Saturday, March 11, 2017.  Tickets go on sale January 27. Flyers will come home with your child(ren) on Friday, January 20.

Attendance EVERY DAY COUNTS!: The State, District, and Camino Pablo all share the goal of having a higher daily percentage of students at school. Every day, and child, counts! The learning that happens in the classroom can’t be replicated with make-up work.

 

An unexcused absence is when a child misses school for an entire day and is not ill. A child can be on an independent study when on a trip for 5 or more days. The state reimburses us for days missed on independent study, and those absences are excused. However, the issue remains that important learning was missed.

DIgital Citizenship Week: It’s Digital Citizenship Week! In our MSD community, we will be discussing how we can be kind online over the next few weeks. This week we will focus on what it means to be a good digital citizen. We are surveying our MSD community to find out our educational needs for students and parents. Please take a moment to complete our parent survey.

 

Classroom teachers will be sharing a brief video and discussion weekly. The videos are linked below in case you'd like to view too and be able to discuss at home.  Each week we will send you a tip sheet or other resource to help facilitate a conversation at home and extend your child’s learning. On Dec. 6, we will host a parent education night at JMIS for all K-8 parents, so mark your calendars.

HALLOWEEN Halloween is one of CP’s grand traditions that is organized by our Student Council. Here are some reminders for this year’s parade.

  • Teachers will let you know, but most students arrive in costume (and bring a change for later in the day).

  • The parade will be out on the blacktop near Bobcat and will start around 9:45.

  • There are spots marked for classes to gather and other spots for parents. Please respect each other when finding a place to view.

  • Student Council awards prizes. This year’s categories are: Most Creative, Best School Spirit, Funniest, and Best Group.

  • No weapons. Make sure that costumes are school appropriate. NO CLOWN COSTUMES!!!

  • The parade ends with the 5th grade dance.

  • All parents who are in classrooms MUST have completed the MSD volunteer clearance, sign in at the office and visibly wear a volunteer badge.

 

EARTHQUAKE DRILL: On Thursday, Oct. 20, CP will participate in the Great California Shake Out. The purpose of the “ShakeOut” is to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes, so that we can be prepared in the event of the real thing!  Students and staff will practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” before evacuating the classrooms to the fields. Now would be the perfect time to review earthquake preparedness at home.  Please consider reviewing the “Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety” so that your family is well-prepared.

Lunch Recess Walking Club - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  We would like to start a lunch-recess walking club for students at CP. We would start with one day a week. This club would be run by two parent volunteers. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Another option during recess

  • Great exercise

  • Task oriented activity

  • Can lead to social connections

Here are some of the logistics:

  • Parents mark laps on student tally cards

  • Students earn “feet” for finishing a specified number of laps

  • Students earn a T-shirt for walking a total of 26.2 miles

District Styrofoam Ban: At the last school board meeting a group of former JM ECO Club students, including several CP alumnae, made a presentation highlighting the negative impact of polystyrene on the environment. The former JM ECO Club members asked the Board to consider banning polystyrene. These students were so persuasive that the Moraga School Board voted to ban the use of styrofoam in the Moraga School District. Check out the MSD webpage for more info: Styrofoam

PTA Reflections Program is here. The deadline for student submissions in October 11. PTA REFLECTIONS is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2016-2017 theme: What is Your Story?

 

Students are invited to choreograph a dance, produce a film, write a poem or story, compose a song, take a picture, or create a piece of visual art inspired by the theme.  Students can use work created in class or outside of class as long as it is his/her own original effort and follows program guidelines.  Although the emphasis of this program is recognition, a selected group of submissions will move to the next level of judging and may ultimately end up at the state or national level.

Traffic Reminders:  Here are a few reminders about the traffic circle:

  • Please stay in your car. Have your child practice opening the door on the sidewalk side of the car.

  • Once you drop your child off please exit the circle...although it is tempting to watch how cute he/she is walking to class

  • The closer you arrive to 8:25 the more crowded the circle gets

 

9:15-9:25 Recess for 1st and 2nd Late Start: As of now we do not have any playground coverage from 9:15-9:25. 1st and 2nd grade late start students cannot be on the playground until the bell rings at 9:25. If we get a parent who is interested in being a yard duty he/she will need to go through the official hiring process (fingerprints and TB testing).

Every Day Counts: Our students attend school for 180 days. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require students to be involved in activities and projects that deeply engage them in literacy, math, and the content areas. These projects and activities can’t be re-created in make-up work or in the home environment. Studies show that students who miss an average two days a month can have difficulty meeting standards. EVERY DAY COUNTS!

Dear Parents,

 

I am honored and excited to be principal of Camino Pablo Elementary. My wife Alissa and her sister Martha both went to CP, JM and Campo. My in laws live up the road on Shuey. Alissa and I have two children: Jack and Abby. Jack is about to start 6th grade at Walnut Creek intermediate and Abby will be starting her sophomore year at Acalanes. Alissa is a special education teacher at Stanley...our poor kids have teachers 24/7.

 

I spent my childhood in Massachusetts and New York. I moved to California when I was 16 and finished high school in Cupertino. I attended UC Davis. Swimming was my passion in high school and college. During college I taught swim lessons and after college I was head coach of several recreational swim teams in the Lafayette and Danville. Teaching swim lessons in high school and college led me to teaching.

 

After receiving my teaching credential from San Jose State I taught first grade at Burton Valley in Lafayette for 13 years. I spent two more years in Lafayette as an Assistant Principal/Special Education administrator. For the past 5 years I was principal of Parkmead Elementary in Walnut Creek.

 

I have been in education for 20 years because I love the positive impact the art of teaching can have in the life of a student. This positive impact only happens with trust and hard work from a team of parents, teachers, staff, and students. I am excited to be joining your team. I look forward to collaborating with you to make this year motivating, fun, engaging, and successful for your students.

Thank you for making my final years so enjoyable and fulfilling. Since coming to Moraga, I have had the opportunity to work with talented teachers, a wonderful office staff, delightful students and dedicated parents. “It takes a village” is often overused, but at the same time it is true.

            Also, a HUGE thanks for the generous gifts and hijacked spirit assembly last Friday. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Student Council lead the entire assembly with games, activities and valuable prizes. It was almost like I had planned it myself. This proves that copying is the highest form of flattery.

 

As I walk out the door for the last time, I have been reflecting on my 37 years in education. (Actually, I’ve been in school and following a bell schedule since I turned 5 years old.) I have learned some lessons along the way and thought I would pass some of them along to you.

  • Know which hill to die on. Not everything is of equal importance. Things that seem big today will be minor by tomorrow.
  • Children keep us young at heart. The sound of children’s laughter and voices involved in play is a gift. It reminds me to cherish the moments and see the world through the eyes of a child.
  • We have 2 ears and only 1 mouth for a reason- listen. I have started many a conversation with a child with a strong notion of what the outcome would be. However, by asking the right questions, really listening, and asking clarifying questions I have come to new conclusions.
  • Make people feel welcome. A hello and a smile go a long way in determining how people will experience the day. (I think I could apply for to be a “greeter at the door” at Walmart.)
  • Build Community. Everyone wants to belong and it’s our job to be inclusive and welcoming.
  • Celebrate the small things. Each day has at least one thing that can be cheered and celebrated. We all need encouragement. Not just toward goals, but for the mini-steps along the way.
  • Don’t use the words always and never- when arguing. “You never clean up after yourself” does nothing to forward the conversation and ends up polarizing people. (This is also a good one for couples.)

 

I ended last week’s assembly with a verse from the song Everything Possible by the Flirtations. It’s a lullaby. Here is the first verse:

 

You can be anybody that you want to be

You can love whomever you will

You can travel any country where your heart leads

And know I will love you still

You can live by yourself

You can gather friends around

Wow! Friday was pretty incredible. The Spirit Assembly was hijacked and turned over to the Student Council. They led a GREAT retirement assembly for me with games and prizes. The activities were perfect and fit me to a T.  Afterwards, I was whisked away to lunch and was unable to return to work. That sort of explains why this weekly email is late.

The 2016 Summer Reading Program is just around the corner! Teachers will send home student summer reading logs this week. Have your child keep the log in a safe place. By reading over the summer and completing the reading log, students will win prizes in the fall! Prizes include an ice cream ticket and $5 gift certificate for the Scholastic Book Fair, or $10 for 2nd-6th graders who read from multiple categories (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, historical fiction, and biography). We'll again be partnering with Republic Services to collect school supplies for Title 1 schools in our county. Please consider donating spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons (even broken), rulers, markers, paper, backpacks, lunch boxes, scissors, folders, spiral binders, art & craft supplies, chapter and picture books, and sports equipment. Carts will arrive June 2nd and will be picked June 14th

 

CP Garden Needs Help In Summer! Welcome to one of the busiest seasons in the CP garden! If you and your child are interested in owning a week this summer to water, weed, and harvest please email julianadamon@gmail.com. We will have zucchini, tomatoes, honeysuckle, onions, potatoes, cosmos, sunflowers, and beans. We are trying out cucumbers and blueberries too and need help coaxing pumpkins for next fall.

Another day of celebrating MEF’s impact on the lives of our students. This morning parents in grades 2 and 3 got to visit their child’s music classes to see the work done with our Music For Minors teachers. Then this afternoon we were treated to the 4th and 5th grade end of the year concerts. Wow! It was like 7 mini-concerts all at one time- with the 4th then 5th grade strings, the 4th then 5th grade band, the 4th then 5th grade chorus, and the afterschool bucket drumming. Your MEF donations DO matter.

Another GREAT CP event was last night with our Open House. It is fun to watch the children be your tour guide and show pride in their hard work this year. I always find this time of year to be a great time to reflect on the growth our young learners have made over the course of the year. Amazing growth over time is evident when you compare work from the start of the year to the end. Please join me in celebrating your children, their hard work, and great growth.

 

MEF is everywhere in enriching your child’s educational experience. I am always in awe of the art display in the MUR for Open House. The wide variety of art (landscapes, animals, still life, mosaics) and art medium (watercolors, oil pastels, chalk) never ceases to amaze me. Thank you MEF for enriching our children’s lives. It’s not too late to make your donation to MEF this year.

 

I am so proud of our CP students working together to achieve great things. The results are back from the Rotary Field Day for grades 3-5, and CP had a great showing! These results are for all schools and classes across the Moraga School District

  • Ms. Faber’s class got 2nd place for the class with the most medals.

Moving Forward into next year, I am happy to announce that CP’s new principal will be Chris Reddam. The final step occurred at Tuesday night’s board meeting where the board unanimously approved his hiring. Chris has endured a rigorous interview process that included many parents, staff, and activities. Most recently he has been the principal of Park Mead School in Walnut Creek. (You should have received an email from the District Office Wednesday with this announcement.)

            I am happy to be leaving the educational leadership of CP in such capable hands. I know that you will welcome him into the CP community the same way that you did for me.

            Chris and I will be meeting to ensure a smooth transition.

Reinforcing the LifeSkills at home helps to cement these traits in our children. Here are some quick ideas of what the LifeSkills can look like in the home environment.

Responsibility: To respond when appropriate, to be accountable for your actions

-           Return borrowed items to people or to their agreed upon places.

Camino Pablo PTA is looking to fill the following positions for next year!

Book Club Chair:  Love books?  We are looking for a volunteer to run this very popular program.  Book Club is available for all 4th and 5th grade students.  It is offered once a month during lunchtime.  Does your child like to read?  This could be the perfect position for you!  This is an easy and fun way to get involved without a lot of additional time commitment.  Grab a friend and enjoy some great kid books!

Legislative Representative:  One volunteer is needed to keep up with the local and state legislative news that affects our school, and communicate the news with the CP community.  We have some important issues this year so we'd love a person who is passionate about local issues and wants to be involved.

Reflections Co-Chairs:  Love Art??  We are looking for two volunteers to run this program who have an appreciation for supporting art for our kids.  The Reflections program is a statewide PTA run art contest.  This program provides opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and to receive positive recognition for original works of art inspired by a pre-selected theme, while increasing community awareness on the importance of the arts in education.  We need two volunteers to promote the program around the school and help collect and submit the entries.

School Picnic Co-Chairs:  Love a good carnival?  We are looking for three volunteers to help organize our very popular CP Picnic which takes place in September.

Donations to the Moraga Education Foundation help support science and technology, staff and programs, every day at Camino Pablo. Thursday night we had a GREAT Science Fair On Friday morning the classes did a walkthrough of the Science Fair.

            Ms. Hazarabedian is our Science aide and is funded by your donations to MEF. Ms. H goes above and beyond in conferring, coaching and assisting our students in the science fair.

Thank you to all of the families who have made a gift to MEF this year.  We are still $550,000 short of our annual fundraising goal, so please support every CP student, every day and donate to MEF.

Teacher appreciation week… was a thoughtful, delicious, creative event. I appreciate the time that goes into making our teachers feel loved and appreciated. Thanks to PTA for another GREAT assembly this past week. The students were treated to international Storyteller Diane Ferlatte.

 

The Kindergarten annual play “Hug Time” was today. I love this CP tradition and how all the kids join in on the final song! This is in part another positive benefit of your contributions to MEF who fund out fabulous Teaching Assistants who help out in every aspect of the classroom (and assembly).

 

Three “Community Engagement” meetings have been planned for the purpose of educating folks (parents and community members) about our school facilities and the exploration of a future bond.  One meeting is planned at each school site.  Time: 6:30.  LP on 4/18.  CP on 4/25.  Rh on 4/27.  JM on 5/4.

 

Helping pets in need! Second grade Girl Scout Troop 33499 is holding a pet food drive for the Contra Costa Humane Society. Please consider donating unopened dry or canned dog or cat food, any brand is welcome! There is a bin in the hallway across from the office. Donations will be accepted April 18th - April 29. Thank you!

The parents serve a 2-year term. The main charge of the committee is to work with the principal and staff in developing the annual School Plan which guides our work for the year. PTA Assembly on Tues., Apr. 12, 9:45 and 10:45 Diane Ferlatte is at the forefront of the multicultural renaissance of the oral tradition as she augments inventive stagecraft with the actor´s skill at expression, gesture, and intense emotion, to create multiple characters for each story. She weaves tales from many cultures, and many of her stories have African, Southern, and African-American roots. In her performances, the multi-talented Ferlatte sings, signs (American Sign Language), uses percussive instruments, and will be accompanied by Erik Pearson on banjo and guitar. With a repertoire of hundreds of stories and songs, she tells folk-tales, fables, legends, historical, contemporary, and personal stories for all ages. Feel free to join us in the MUR.

 

Wow! I had the pleasure this week to attend 3 different music concerts that highlighted our 5th graders along with some groups from JM and Campo. Not only was it 3 great nights of music, but it shows the progression (and improvement) in our young musicians as they move through the grade levels and the music programs.

Growth Mindset- Part 3. To help instill a growth mindset in children, parents are encouraged to praise them for their effort rather than for talent or the final result. Here are some specific examples:

Do not say: You are so smart!

Do say: You work hard and it shows! (Be specific about complementing the specific process and/or effort the child demonstrates.)

Do not say: You are a great athlete. You could be the next (pick a super athlete)!

Do say: You focus on ___________ (batting stance, dribbling, etc.) has really made a positive difference. OR I noticed that you pay good attention when you are on the field.

Do not say: You always get good grades; that makes me happy.

Do say: When you put forth effort, it really shows in your grades. You should be proud of yourself. We are proud of you!

Do not say: You are a gifted musician.

Do say: You seem to really enjoy playing the piano. Keep practicing and you will see amazing results.

Do not say: Your drawing is wonderful; you are my little artist.

Do say: I see that you have been practicing your drawing; what a great improvement. Tell me about it.

Changing what we say is a hard! (I know. I’ve been trying to do it with our grandchildren.) The next time you are ready to praise your child, stop and think about how to use that opportunity to foster a growth mindset by celebrating your child’s effort and attitude through the experience- rather than just the final accomplishment.

 

We’re extremely proud of our budding CP musicians. Our 5th grade musicians will be performing with their JM and Campo counterparts at the Campo Performing Arts Center (CPAC) next week. Don't miss out... it's a great opportunity to show your child, who may be struggling in the early phase of learning an instrument, just how exciting music can be as they progress through the grades. From the Art Studio. These past weeks, 1st through 3rd grade students enjoyed a literature-inspired art lesson to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday. 1st and 2nd grade students listened to One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. The book served as a drawing visual for their creation of a whimsical fish using soft chalk pastels. 3rd grade students completed a similar Dr. Seuss lesson using the book Hop on Pop. 

4th and 5th grade students learned about Henri Matisse and how he was known as the artist who painted with scissors. He was also known as the master of color. Students’ learned about organic shapes (curved and round lines) and complimentary colors as they created a paper collage panel in the style of Henri Matisse.

The Drop Off Circle works best when everyone uses the same procedure. A couple of reminders:

  • Pull forward
  • Students exit on the curb side.
  • Parents stay in the car.
  • Students get out anywhere on the circle.
  • Exit the circle. Do NOT sit and watch your child head to the yard.
  • Do NOT use the parking lot for drop off. It interrupts the flow, causes congestion, and gets in the way of staff arriving for work.

Growth Mindset- Part 2. One way parents can really help their children is by carefully choosing the words they use when they praise them. Every word and action sends a message that tells children how to think about themselves. It can be a fixed message that says, “You have permanent traits and I’m judging them.” (either positively or negatively). Or it can be a growth mindset message that says, “You are a developing person and I am interested in your development.”

Listen for the messages in these examples. “You learned that so quickly. You’re so smart.” Or “Look at that drawing; you are the next Picasso!” If you’re like most parents, you hear these as supportive, esteem-boosting messages. But listen more closely. See if you can hear the unsaid messages- the ones that children hear. “If I don’t learn something quickly, I’m not smart.” “I shouldn’t try drawing anything hard or they’ll see I’m no Picasso.”

The most important thing you can do to help your child instill a growth mindset is to praise them for effort rather than talent. Messages like, “You learned that so quickly! You’re so smart!” teach the child that effort is a sign of weakness and that they are either smart or they’re not. They, when they encounter difficulty in the future, they might not know how to deal with it. Instead, messages such as, “I like the way you approached that problem,” or “It looks like your hard work really paid off,” or “I see that you have been practicing your drawing. Tell me about it.” Teaches kids that effort is something we can all benefit from to reach our full potential, and that they need to be working purposefully in order to grow.

I visit a lot of classrooms and spend time across the campus throughout the week. Every once in a while I like to share out what I am seeing.

  • 1st grades are busy with their Flat Stanley project and getting them in the mail for a variety of adventures.
  • 2nd grade students are using various books (both fiction and non-fiction) with a focus on reading for understanding.
  • A group of 5th grade students immediately helped a peer to clean up a mess in the lunchroom without being asked.
  • Sibling Pictures were being taken outside the office with arms around brothers and sisters; some with matching green mustaches!

It is this combination of hands on academics, students taking initiative and positive peer relationships that makes CP a GREAT school.

Superintendent Burns will be at CP Tuesday morning at 9:30 in Room 7 to meet with parents to go over the LCAP (this means progress on goals for this year and anticipated goals for next year). This is a great way to stay informed on what is happening at the District level.

 

The will be a Governing Board Workshop on Tuesday, March 22, 7-9 PM in the JM Library. The focus will be a presentation on sleep research and exploring a later start time at Joaquin Moraga. The presentation will be done by JM School Psychologist, Dr. Day, and Principal, Joan Danilson. There will be an opportunity for public comment and discussion. If your kids are heading to JM (which is all of you) this is a meeting worth attending.

 

Growth Mindset has been a topic of conversation in our staff meetings. Over the next few weeks I will be sharing some information about this with you. You may want to check out the book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success” by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D

Mindset is a simple idea discovered by Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck in decades of research on achievement and success- a simple idea that makes all the difference. Dr. Dweck realized that there are two mindsets- a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.

            In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success- without effort. They’re wrong.

            In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work- brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all people who achieved top performance had these qualities. Research shows that people with this view reach higher levels of success that people with fixed mindset beliefs. Teaching a growth mindset creates motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, and sports.

Superintendent Burns sent a special email Thursday to all of you about a recent court decision about student records. I would strongly suggest that you carefully read his email (and any of the links to more information) and make your own informed decision about completing the opt out form.

 

Build It! Family Game & Math Night is scheduled for Thurs., March 3rd, from 6-8pm in CP's Multi-Use Room. Bring the whole family for a fun night playing games, building structures and more.  This year's theme is "Build It!" brought to us by the Lawrence Hall of Science. Appropriate for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult. If you can volunteer to help during the event, please contact Kelly Rossi.

 

News from the Art Studio and our new art teacher, Ms. Viboch. These past weeks, first through fifth grade students have enjoyed working on Winter-themed art lessons. 

First through third grade students listened to the story Ernest  by Catherine Raynor, a story of a too-big moose.  The story demonstrates (quite literally) that this moose is so big; he can’t even fit into a regular book.  The book served as a great drawing visual for the creation of a winter moose collage.  For the first lesson, students drew and painted the background (a simple perspective lesson) using oil pastels and tempera paint.  For the second lesson, together we drew Ernest the moose, cut it out and glued the moose to the background.

Fourth and fifth grade students’ created pastel polar bears.  Students learned how to make a stencil, create light (we discussed the Northern Lights) with chalk pastels, and draw a polar bear.  There is more than one-way to create a piece of art and the stencil approach demonstrated this concept perfectly.  This project uses a self-made stencil and a variety of mediums to create this tranquil art.  Every piece is unique and beautiful.

JM News

5th Grade parents- It is the goal of Joaquin Moraga Intermediate to place all students in a math course that allows them to be successful and is challenging.  Incoming 6th grade math students may be enrolled in either Common Core Rigor 6 or the Accelerated Common Core 6/7A pathway. Student placement in these math classes is dependent on three components:  a performance task exam, a standards exam, and the student’s 5th grade math performance.  On Tuesday, March 1st from 6:00-7:00 PM in the JM auditorium, the math department will be explaining these pathways, the placement process, and answering questions. Incoming sixth grade parents, please join us to learn more about mathematics instruction at Joaquin Moraga.

 

Upper Grade Parents- JM is looking at recent sleep research and the possibility of a later start time. Come join them on Feb. 25th at the JM library from 6:00-7:30 for a parent education about this topic.

 

Campolindo News

Campolindo High School presents West Side Story. From the first snapping fingers to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most beloved musical dramas of all time. Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s iconic score captures the turbulent world of two young idealistic lovers caught between rival street gangs in New York City in the 1950’s. MSD Parent Education Presentation--Speak Up Be Safe (SUBS) Program started 3 years ago and is an annual set of lesson for students in grades 1, 3, and 5. Join us in learning about this program that covers all forms of child abuse as well as bullying, cyber-bullying/technology safety, and sexual harassment.  SUBS lessons will be provided in the 3rd and 5th grade classrooms in February and early March and in the 1st grade classrooms in May. The meeting is Thurs., Feb. 4th, 6:30-8:00PM, JM Library.

 

The Moraga iKind Project, an extension of the JM iKind Project, is building momentum to promote kindness and courtesy, and to foster courage, bravery and inclusion in our schools - and beyond our schools. As part of the process, they are sponsoring the movie "A Brave Heart, the Lizzie Velasquez Story". The movie will be shown at the Campolindo High School Performing Arts Center on 2/11/16 at 7:00 PM.  Following the movie, a student panel will respond to the movie and audience questions. This is an appropriate family event for grades 4th and up. Please join them.

 

THANK YOU to Earth Capades (and PTA) for a highly entertaining and educational assembly today on preserving the earth's resources and keeping it CLEAN! Thanks to the Central Contra Costa Waste Authority (Waste Busters) for generously sponsoring this wonderful event.  Lastly, congratulations to the students, staff, and parent volunteers of the CP community. CP recycles/composts 73% of its waste vs 27% landfill.  This is the lowest school landfill percentage ever seen by Earth Capades... and they tour all over the country!  Definitely something to be proud of and continue to improve!

CP’s Annual Spelling Bee was held this Tuesday morning at a GREAT assembly for the upper grades. 18 classroom finalists from grades 3-5 competed. I am proud to announce that Neha Ravikumar will represent CP at the county spelling bee in March. Chloe Levine was our runner up. Thanks also go to Tami and Angel- the parent volunteers who did all of the behind the scenes work and getting the students ready.

Music for Minors, a nonprofit organization, continues to provide sequential, standards-based music education programs in grades TK-5 this school year after the late resignation of a teacher specializing in and credentialed to teach elementary music.  Music for Minors classes provides students with a variety of musical experiences through hands-on participation in many facets of music, such as singing, movement, theory, dance, musical games, and use of rhythm instruments.  The 4th and 5th grade Music for Minors chorus program is different from prior year programs as instruction includes some instrumental instruction. 

 

Help! We need some extra parents to work an hour a couple of days a week in the lunchroom and on the yard from 12:00-1:00. Open Position on the School Board. Interested in making a difference in the educational lives of children in Moraga?  The Moraga School District Governing Board has a vacancy and you just might be the right person for the job!  Governing Board members serve as the primary body for setting school district policy and direction, and overseeing District finances in order to provide all Moraga children with the education they need now and in the future.  The vacancy will be filled via an appointment process and once appointed, the new Governing Board member will serve in office from January 26, 2016 until the December 2016 Governing Board meeting.  To continue serving beyond December 2016, this Governing Board member will have to file for candidacy and run in November 2016 for a four-year term as an elected Governing Board member.  The formal announcement for filling the vacancy can be found on the MSD website homepage.  Information about the application and appointment process can also be found on the MSD website homepage.  An informational meeting will be held at 6:00 PM on January 12, 2016, at the JM library for applicants who are interested in learning more about the appointment process and the roles and responsibilities of Governing Board members.  Applicants are welcome to contact Governing Board members and the superintendent about the process, commitment, and responsibilities of Board members.

Unexcused Absences- I really need your help in scheduling vacations around the school calendar. We do NOT receive funding for students who are absent- for both excused illness (please keep your sick children at home) and unexcused reasons like travel. Fun Facts:

-For the months of October and November, CP had a total of 116 unexcused absences.

-The state reimburses districts $38.99 for each child per day.

-That means that CP has cost the District $4522.84 in just the last 2 months.

-Now many of you generously reimburse the District the $38.99 for each day, but nothing can replace the value of being a part of the learning community every day!

-Unexcused absences also impacts our reporting with the State of California.

Safe School Ambassador (SSA) training occurred on Monday and Tuesday this week thanks to the efforts of Mr. Barnett, Ms. Herbert, Ms. Nixdorff and Ms. Fallon. Here is some basic information about the SSA program.

-New 3rd and 4th grade Ambassadors were trained this week. Students are nominated by teachers. The goal is to train students who come from all of the different student groups at our school. These students receive in depth training on noticing acts of mistreatment, thinking about how they can make a difference, and using the Upstander strategies- supporting, balancing, reasoning, distracting and getting help.

-Returning 4th and 5th grade Ambassadors joined them on Tuesday afternoon for a refresher course and practicing the skills through a variety of skits.

-All CP students are exposed to these Upstander strategies through classroom lessons and at our all school assemblies.

-PTA has supported this program since its implementation 5 years ago.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, there is a lot to be thankful for at CP.  We can be thankful for the parents and caregivers who donate their time and money to ensure our school can provide the type of education that our children need to reach their full potential.  We can be thankful for our Principal, Tom Rust, whose leadership, support, and sense of humor keeps the CP community happy, healthy, and thriving.  We can be thankful for our teachers and staff who see the potential in students every day and work hard to make them the best they can be.  We can be thankful for our custodial staff who keeps our school safe, clean, and comfortable and our office staff, Jennifer and Martha, for the countless roles they play everyday at CP.   

Thank you everyone for making the CP community the very best for our children.   Safe travels if you are on the road this holiday.  Enjoy your time with family and friends and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Movie Matinee Was A Huge Success!
 
CP's first ever movie matinee yesterday was a hit!  Over 130 students participated and enjoyed an afternoon of food, friends, and a movie in the MUR after school.  It was a great way to enjoy a minimum day!  With preliminary numbers in, it looks like our Movie Matinee raised over $1,200 for the CP PTA! 
 
A huge thank you to Carol McAlpin and Kelly Sullivan for organizing and to all of our wonderful parent volunteers.  Finally, thank you to all of the families who participated!

This November, we are thankful for every Camino Pablo parent who supports the Moraga Education Foundation to make CP outstanding.  Your MEF donations support every student, every day through a variety of programs.  MEF provided $1.5M to the Moraga School District this year to fund programs and staff.  Your CP students, teachers and administration are thankful every day for your support of MEF.  Happy Thanksgiving!

The existing Moraga Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan is in need of an update that meets the Goals and Objectives outlined in the Moraga General Plan. The Moraga Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan is intended to improve circulation within the Town, and make transportation easier and more enjoyable for all users, while prioritizing multi-modal transportation projects rather traditional road improvements. 4th-8th grade students are encouraged to complete the survey.  Younger students may also complete the survey, however, parent assistance will likely be needed. Last Chance to Donate Used Clothing, Shoes, and Sports Equipment!
 
It's time to clean out your closets and take out all of last year's winter clothing and shoes that no longer fit!!  Help Girl Scout Troop 31769 stock Mentor Me's clothing closet with warm clothes and shoes for the wet winter.  Mentor Me is a school-based mentoring program in the North Bay that matches at-risk kids ages 5-18 with volunteer adult mentors. Additionally, Mentor Me offers tutoring, counseling, college admissions coaching, food, clothing and a place to go after school.  All clothing sizes are welcome as the mentees range from 5-18 years old.

Scholastic Book Fair Was A HUGE Success
 
Thank you to everyone who worked and supported the Scholastic Book Fair this year, especially our new librarian, Joy Braitberg and Lisa Brown.  CP families' support made over $3700 for the library and donated many books for classroom libraries from the teacher wish lists.  This year, we had 185 students participating in the summer reading program who received gift certificates to the book fair.  

In addition, we collected $88 in spare change and donations to buy books for the charity, Reading Partners in Oakland.  We bought books with that money from the book fair to donate to the book drive for them during our upcoming Read-a-thon.
