Another Year: The 2017-2018 school year is over. The CP staff would like to thank all of you for the support, volunteering, and donations. Without you CP would not be the same. We wish you a happy and fun filled summer!

 

Staffing Next Year: There are a few changes to the Camino Pablo Staff for next year. We say goodbye to the following staff members. Their work with our students is appreciated and they will be missed:

  • Mrs. Faldt - 2nd grade teacher (retired)
  • Mrs. Nixdorff - 3rd grade teacher (teaching 6th grade core at JM)
  • Mrs. Kunnes - Learning Center teacher (moving to a full time position at Rheem)
  • Mrs. Eades - School Psychologist (working closer to home)
  • Mrs. O’Neil - English Learner Teacher (retiring)
  • Mr. Jacobo - Night Custodian (moving to Head Custodian position in Lafayette)
  • Mrs. Bannister - Teachers Assistant
  • Mrs. Whittaker - Teachers Assistant

We are excited to welcome Mrs. Viboch to our 2nd grade team. Mrs. Viboch is a National Board Certified teacher who comes to us from Los Perales. During her career she has taught Kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and 5th grade. Welcome to CP Mrs. Viboch!

 

We are in the process of filling other vacancies. I will update you on our staffing in mid August.

 

CP Olympics: Thank you to all the parents who volunteered and made this day such a great success.

 

Summer Office Hours: 

  • The CP office will be open 8:00-4:00 this week
  • The office will be closed for the summer from 6/18/18 through 8/3/2018
  • The office will reopen on Monday, August 6, 2018 at 8:00

 

Grade Level Donation Supply Lists: This year each grade will publish a DONATION SUPPLY LIST. If you would like to do Back to School shopping in August and purchase supplies for donation to your child’s classroom please use these lists. Please remember these are donations and no child will go without the appropriate supplies. DONATION SUPPLY LIST can be viewed on the CP website (after June 18). I will also send a stand alone message in June and August with links to the lists.

 

Start of the Year Reminder: All Moraga School District Kindergarten through 3rd grade students will follow an 8:25 AM to 1:55 PM instructional schedule for the first three weeks of school, August 21 through September 7. This three-week early release period provides teachers time to individually assess their student's reading and math levels.  Teachers use the assessment information to provide differentiated learning experiences for all students, as well as to identify students who may be eligible for additional support. K – 3rd grade teachers will contact parents to schedule dates and times for individual student assessment appointments.  We thank you in advance for your understanding and flexibility regarding this “early bird” schedule.

 

Start of the Year Schedule ALL EARLY TK-3rd 8/21/2018 through 9/2/2018:

  • TK = 8:40-12:17
  • K-3rd = 8:25-1:55 (except Wednesdays = 8:25-1:50)

CP Summer Reading Program: Blast off with a book this summer!  The 2018 Summer Reading Program will begin Friday, June 8th for rising 1st-6th graders!  Information will be sent home the last week of school.  By reading, filling out the log, and turning it in by September 7th, your child will win prizes in the fall!  Prizes include an ice cream ticket and $5 Gift Certificate for the Scholastic Book Fair, or $10 for 2nd-6th graders if students read from multiple categories (Fiction, Non-fiction, Poetry, Historical Fiction, Biography).  The log can also be downloaded from the CP PTA Summer Reading page.  Please contact Maile Dunn with questions. CP Olympics 6/6/2018 We can’t wait for Wednesday! Team colors have been chosen (ask your child or your child’s teacher). Staff is ready to take on the 5th graders in kickball. Let the games begin!

 

Please remember to send your child with a sweatshirt, hat, water bottle, and apply sunscreen. We will be spending much of the day outside. REMINDER - TK/K - All Early 8:25-12:02 this Wednesday.

CP Yearbooks - Coming Tuesday: Yearbooks have arrived!  If you did not purchase one in the beginning of the year, leftover copies are available in the office starting on Tuesday, June 5th. Dear Parents,

 

A few weeks ago I sent a reminder about inclusivity at CP. We need your help and support. Over the past few months, we have had issues with students writing bad words and pictures in bathrooms. In each case, we have investigated, but have not always found the culprit. We have talked with classes and grades about the impact of these actions. We ask that you give your children age-appropriate reminders on the impact of bad words and pictures.  

 

When we do find out a student has done this there are consequences, but we also work with the student to understand the meaning and impact of these words and pictures. Throughout the year we work with all our students in many different ways on how to make CP a place where all students and adults feel safe, included, and happy.

We Feel Appreciated: Thank you for a wonderful teacher appreciation week. A special thank you to Room Parent Chair Amy Martinez and all the other room parents who led the appreciation army. We are lucky to work at a school with such generous and supportive parents.

 

CP Open House and Art Show is THIS Thursday, May 17 from 7:00-8:00: Open House is a celebration of student learning and CP students and staff are excited to show off evidence of their hard work and thinking. 

 

Don’t miss the art show in the MUR. Our art teacher, Mrs. Larson, has brought out the inner artist in our students. 

 

Please remember that Open House is not a time for a parent teacher conference or “interviewing” teachers from the next grade level. Our teachers will be busy celebrating the student’s learning.

 

Open House Day will be a minimum day for all students.  TK and Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 11:50 and 1st through 5th graders at 12:12.  There is no lunch served on minimum days

 

New Assistant Secretary: Last week we interviewed four amazing candidates for the assistant secretary position. I am happy to introduce Elizabeth Thies as our new assistant secretary. She will be a great addition to our CP family. She will begin early next week.

 

School Site Council (SSC) is Looking for THREE MORE Parent Members 

School Site Council (SSC) is made up of 7 parents and 7 teachers. The purpose of SSC is to help create, monitor, and approve the Camino Pablo Site Plan. The SSC has five meetings a year. Meetings are at CP and last from 3:15-4:30. This a great way to be involved in planning and goal setting that directly supports our amazing students. If you are interested in SSC please contact via email stating your interest ASAP.

 

Wild Robot Collection: We will be collecting any unwanted Wild Robot books from the One School, One Book program. The books will be donated to another school participating in the program. You can drop off books under the Wild Robot bulletin board outside of the office.

 

Bike Safety: Several parents have reported seeing students biking to and from school not wearing helmets, not wearing helmets properly, and/or not following bike traffic rules. If your child bikes or scooters to or from school please make sure he/she wears a helmet and understands the rules of the road.

 

5th Grade CAASPP Testing (and 3rd and 4th make-ups) Continue This Week: The CAASPP test assess students in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The state uses the results of these tests as one factor in determining our progress as a school and district. Here is a link to the testing schedule. If a child is absent during a testing session he/she has to miss class time to make-up the missed session. Attendance on these days is important.

 

Are You Moving?: If your family is planning on moving out of the CP attendance area please let the office know so we can accurately plan classes for next year.

 

How Many Classes Will There Be Next Year in My Child’s Grade? The number of class sections for each grade level is determined by looking at district enrollment. Between now and mid August the principals and superintendent meet twice a month to look at overall enrollment decisions. Starting in February, after TK/K registration, the principals and superintendent begin tracking enrollment. In May we look at enrollment and make preliminary decisions on how many classes there will be at each site. However, over the summer students move in and out of the district which can cause changes to our spring planning. Enrollment guides our decisions and enrollment is not final until August. We appreciate your patience.

 

Teachers Assistants (TA) NEEDED: Several of our amazing Teacher Assistants are retiring at the end of this year. If you are interested in working with students, and doing some preparation work for the teacher, a Teacher’s Assistant (TA) might be perfect for you . The position(s) is 4 or 5 days a week and can range from 6 to 16 hours a week depending on grade level and whether you have one or two TA positions. If you are interested, or know of anyone who is interested, please email me.

Goodbye Martha: Martha White, our assistant secretary, will be leaving CP to start a job at St. Mary’s college. Martha will always be part of the CP family. Her last day will be Friday. We will miss her hard work and sense of humor.

3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Rotary Field Day! The 26th Annual Moraga Rotary Field Day will be held after school on Wednesday, May 9 at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School.  All 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are encouraged to participate and represent CP at this free and fun event.  Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. Medals will be awarded to the top three competitors in each event listed below:

Preparing Students for Life - May 10th 6:30-8:00 at Orinda Middle School MUR: Join parents from surrounding districts listen to Dan Peters Ph.D. discussing some of the following questions/topics: How do we prepare our children to be successful adults? How much should we help them succeed? How do I make sure my child doesn’t get left behind? How do I prepare my child for life? Growing up in today’s world is increasingly complex as is parenting our children in this new age. With childhood and teen stress, anxiety, and depression on the rise, it is critical that parents focus on preparing their children with the foundational life skills necessary for dealing with adversity, making good choices, and creating a meaningful life. Participants will learn strategies for building their child’s internal strength, responding to adversity, and being open to life’s possibilities. Here is the flyer.

 

The Moraga Community Faire & Car Show on May 12 will feature a Kids Zone with pony rides, a climbing wall and a bounce house for just $5 per child in addition to all of the free activities including classic cars, games, booths and live entertainment. The Moraga Police Department will be hosting bike safety training, so families are encouraged to ride bikes to the Faire and can take advantage of a free bike valet. The Faire, which is organized by the Moraga Chamber of Commerce, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the town’s Rheem Valley Shopping Center.

District Curriculum Parent Preview: Moraga School District parents, students, teachers, administrators and other community members are invited to preview new instructional materials considered for District adoption from April 16, 2018 through May 2, 2018.  Materials available for preview include a 6th-8th grade English language arts program, a K-2nd grade supplemental phonics program, a 3rd-5th grade supplemental grammar program and a 7th-8th grade Spanish program.

The public preview for these instructional materials will be held at the Joaquin Moraga Library.  Individuals interested in previewing these materials may review them between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.  If interested, please contact  Alberta Falcone, District Textbook Coordinator, at (925) 377-4255 or afalcone@moraga.k12.ca.us to schedule an appointment.  The materials will not be available for check out.

3rd-5th Grade CAASPP Testing Starts This Week: The CAASPP test assess students in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The state uses the results of these tests as one factor in determining our progress as a school and district. Here is a link to the testing schedule. If a child is absent during a testing session he/she has to miss class time to make-up the missed session. Attendance on these days is important.

 

Are You Moving?: If your family is planning on moving out of the CP attendance area please let the office know so we can accurately plan classes for next year.

 

How Many Classes Will There Be Next Year in My Child’s Grade? The number of class sections for each grade level is determined by looking at district enrollment. Between now and mid August the principals and superintendent meet twice a month to look at overall enrollment decisions. Starting in February, after TK/K registration, the principals and superintendent begin tracking enrollment. In May we look at enrollment and make preliminary decisions on how many classes there will be at each site. However, over the summer students move in and out of the district which can cause changes to our spring planning. Enrollment guides our decisions and enrollment is not final until August. We appreciate your patience.

 

Teachers Assistants (TA) NEEDED: Several of our amazing Teacher Assistants are retiring at the end of this year. If you are interested in working with students, and doing some preparation work for the teacher, a Teacher’s Assistant (TA) might be perfect for you . The position(s) is 4 or 5 days a week and can range from 6 to 16 hours a week depending on grade level and whether you have one or two TA positions. If you are interested, or know of anyone who is interested, please email me.

 

MSD Cultural Proficiency Committee: The Cultural Proficiency Committee (CPC), with interest to communicate meeting discussion topics and outcomes, will regularly communicate meeting summaries to staff and parents following each CPC meeting.  Meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the MSD website: www.moraga.k12.ca.us>District>Cultural Proficiency Committee. 

 

April 18, 2018 CPC Meeting Summary:

The CPC agreed, in order to increase transparency, to communicate CPC meeting summaries to all parents via PTA newsletters and to create a CPC website. The CPC website will expand over time to include meeting notes, FAQs & other updates. 

 

The CPC recommended the District plan and present a fall 2018 evening program for parents to learn about the purpose of the CPC, Wellness Committee, Coordinating Council and Student Safety Committee.

 

 The CPC reviewed draft bylaws and discussed whether CPC community members (community persons who are not current MSD parents or MSD employees) should be voting members and how to establish nomination committees.

MSD Safety Consultants - Safe Havens: The MSD School Board approved a contract with the safety consulting company Safe Havens for the purposes of giving MSD recommendations of how to improve safety throughout the district. The schedule for Safe Havens safety assessments is:

  • April 26 Les Nichols visited schools to review the schools' perimeter protection measures, building entryway configurations, natural access control, and surveillance, and nighttime lighting
  • April 27: district-level meetings with Mike Dorn
  • May 31-June 1 Russell Bentley to visit schools to evaluate security technologies in use at the schools, such as access control systems, emergency communications systems, surveillance camera systems, and intrusion detection systems
  • June 4 & 5 Chris Dorn to visit schools to conduct a physical security assessment and the level of emergency preparedness

 

School Site Council (SSC) is Looking for TWO MORE Parent Members 

School Site Council (SSC) is made up of 7 parents and 7 teachers. The purpose of SSC is to help create, monitor, and approve the Camino Pablo Site Plan. The SSC has five meetings a year. Meetings are at CP and last from 3:15-4:30. This a great way to be involved in planning and goal setting that directly supports our amazing students. If you are interested in SSC please contact via email stating your interest ASAP.

 

3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Rotary Field Day! The 26th Annual Moraga Rotary Field Day will be held after school on Wednesday, May 9 at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School.  All 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are encouraged to participate and represent CP at this free and fun event.  Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. Medals will be awarded to the top three competitors in each event listed below:

  • Shuttle Relay
  • Standing Long Jump/Running Long Jump
  • Softball Throw/Football Throw
  • 50 Yard Dash
  • Sack Race

If you feel that your child has a unique situation or need that I need to be aware of during this careful placement process please send me an email by 4/27/2018. These requests should not be made through the teacher. Requests for a specific teacher will not be granted. Please know that your request will be considered within the larger context of balancing classes.

YOU ARE MEF: A huge thank you to those parents who helped to organize, and those parents who participated in, this past Saturday’s MEF event. The educational experience of every Camino Pablo student is enriched and enhanced every day because of gifts to the Moraga Education Foundation.  CP has additional staff and programs at our school because of the generosity of MEF donors.  

 

To work in a community that values and supports its schools and education is amazing.   Every day, students directly interact with teachers and staff that are a reflection of your support.  From PE with Ms. Peterson and Mr. Studebaker, to art with Ms. Larson, to music with Mrs. Arvindan, Mr. Jent and Mr. Noel, to computers with Ms. Lynch, and library with Ms. Braitberg to your student’s classroom aide, donations to MEF are tangible and their impact is felt all around.  

 

In addition, donations are enhancing the technology at CP and supporting the Lucy Calkins’ Reading and Writing program.  These will serve your students well as they continue their educational journey throughout CP and beyond.

CAASPP Testing: Each May 3rd-5th grade students take the CAASPP test. This test assess students in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The state uses the results of these tests as one factor in determining our progress as a school and district. Here is a link to the testing schedule. If a child is absent during a testing session he/she has to miss class time to make-up the missed session. Attendance on these days is important.

 

Class Placement

The CP team spends a lot of time working on classroom placement for next year. Our main goal when building classes is to create balanced classes. Balancing classes requires us to look at many variables such as: students that need extra support, academic progress, peer relationships, etc. I work on this process with each grade level twice in May. During this process we build balanced classes and I place each class with a specific teacher.

 

If you feel that your child has a unique situation or need that I need to be aware of during this careful placement process please send me an email by 4/28/2017. These requests should not be made through the teacher. Requests for a specific teacher will not be granted. Please know that your request will be considered within the larger context of balancing classes.

 

CP FUNDRAISER: Our next Patxi's Fundraiser is slated for Wednesday, April 18 at their Lafayette location - dine in, take out, delivery all count. 

 

We receive 10% of proceeds for the entire day, as opposed to only CP-generated proceeds, which is great.  No magic word needed at checkout.

District Curriculum Parent Preview: Moraga School District parents, students, teachers, administrators and other community members are invited to preview new instructional materials considered for District adoption from April 16, 2018 through May 2, 2018.  Materials available for preview include a 6th-8th grade English language arts program, a K-2nd grade supplemental phonics program, a 3rd-5th grade supplemental grammar program and a 7th-8th grade Spanish program.

The public preview for these instructional materials will be held at the Joaquin Moraga Library.  Individuals interested in previewing these materials may review them between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.  If interested, please contact  Alberta Falcone, District Textbook Coordinator, at (925) 377-4255 or afalcone@moraga.k12.ca.us to schedule an appointment.  The materials will not be available for check out.

3/21/2018 PTA Meeting: We had a huge turnout for this past Wednesday’s PTA meeting. At the meeting we unanimously approved the Camino Pablo Executive Board for the 2018-2019 school year. A special thank you to our nominating committee who worked hard to make sure the process was thorough and fair. 

 

Every Day Counts: When students miss school for reasons other than illness the loss of learning can’t be re-created with make-up work. California Education Code requires that we follow-up on truant students and students with chronic absences. Our follow-up includes official truancy notices starting with students with three or more unexcused absences. 

  • A truant student (California Education Code § 48260) is a student with 3 or more unexcused absences.
  • Chronic absence (California Education Code § 60901(c)(1)) is defined as excused absences that total more than 10% of the total days to date. 

Trips and vacations are not deemed to be excused absences. If a child is on a trip or vacation for more than 4 consecutive school days an independent study can be completed. The independent study needs to be requested well ahead of the first day of the trip in order to give the teacher time to gather the materials. The independent study must be completed on the trip and returned to school signed by the student and parent on the first day back. We appreciate your support. EVERY DAY COUNTS!

Student Discourse: Goal #2 from our site plan is: Students will improve their critical thinking through student discourse. Our goal is to have students talking to each other throughout the day in various ways for the purposes of expressing their thinking, supporting their arguments, and learning from each other. This past Tuesday four students from Mrs. Fallon’s class did an amazing job talking to, and fielding questions from, the school board about discourse in the classroom. We are so proud of our CP students!

 

PTA Meeting: We hope to see you this Wednesday, March 21st 6:30-8pm in Room 7 for the second to last PTA association meeting.  The agenda is posted here and includes voting to approve the 2018-2019 PTA Executive Board.  The final 2017-2018 association meeting will be on Wednesday, May 16th 8:30-10am in Room 7.  There is no PTA meeting in April.

Monday is a Teacher Professional Development Day: While your child(ren) are home tomorrow teachers and staff will be meeting at JM for a full day of professional development. Teachers will be collaborating around the implementation of reading, writing, and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). During the last hour of the day all staff will be reviewing safety protocols.

  • Some cars are attempting to circumvent the pickup line by doing an illegal u-turn
  • Cars turning left into the circle are not always taking turns with the cars turning right 
  • Some cars are driving into the parking lot, parallel parking, and picking up or dropping off students

Each of these actions puts our students in danger and creates frustration for other parents who are following the rules. Please make sure to follow our traffic rules.

  1. Come up with a topic ---- a scientific question you want to answer.  Mrs. H can give you some ideas or you can check out books from our library (the internet is also a good source for project ideas).

 

  1. Fill out and submit an application (including your parent’s signature) by March 9th. 

 

  1. Mrs. H will approve your project idea (or help you refine it) and give you a Science Fair Instruction Booklet with lots of helpful information.  DO NOT begin your project until you have received approval!

One School, One Book: Starting March 2 the entire CP community will be reading the same book for a program called One School, One Book. This book will be introduced to students at an assembly on Friday, March 2. After the assembly each student will bring home his/her own copy (thank you PTA) of the book along with a reading calendar. Our goal is to build a community of readers. Everyone - students, parents, staff - will be participating. This is meant to be a family read aloud experience. We will also put links to podcasts of each "chapter" in the school website. This is a fun way to listen to the "chapter" read by a CP staff member. In school your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions.

 

One School, One Book - Parent Help Needed on 3/2: As part of the kick off for One School, One Book we will need two to four parents to help deliver the books to classrooms. Volunteers would start delivering books after 9:45 on Friday, March 2. Please email me if you are willing to help.

Student Safety: Thursday's violent tragedy was a brutal, and all to frequent, reminder that an educator’s job has changed in the past two decades. Just being prepared to teach is no longer adequate. As a school community it is now critical that we think through, and practice for, these type of violent situations in a way that prepares us without creating a culture of fear for our students.

 

Our current emergency plan outlines protocols for many different emergency situations, including a "lockdown" situation. This year the Moraga School District Student Safety Committee is working on creating "Active Shooter Protocols" for inclusion in each school's emergency plan. I am on the subcommittee working on these protocols.

 

Our newly approved School Site Plan also includes a goal for more staff and community work around our emergency plan, and future active shooter protocols. The school district is also considering using safety experts to do an assessment at each of our school sites for the purposes of giving recommendations that would improve the safety for students, staff, and parents. Once we have an active shooter protocol I will work with our PTA on educating the community.

CP SCIENCE FAIR: It’s almost time for the 31st annual Science Fair, to be held Thursday, April 19th, 2018 at 7:00pm. This is an optional activity for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. If you’re interested in participating, here’s what you need to do:

 

  1. Look at the information on the back and come up with a topic ---- a scientific question you want to answer.  I can give you some ideas or you can check out books from our library (the internet is also a good source for project ideas).

 

  1. Fill out and submit an application (including your parent’s signature) by March 9th. 

 

  1. Mrs. H will approve your project idea (or help you refine it) and give you a Science Fair Instruction Booklet with lots of helpful information.  DO NOT begin your project until you have received approval!

One School, One Book: Starting March 2 the entire CP community will be reading the same book for a program called One School, One Book. This book will be introduced to students at an assembly on Friday, March 2. After the assembly each student will bring home his/her own copy (thank you PTA) of the book along with a reading calendar. Our goal is to build a community of readers. Everyone - students, parents, staff - will be participating. This is meant to be a family read aloud experience. We will also put links to podcasts of each "chapter" in the school website. This is a fun way to listen to the "chapter" read by a CP staff member. In school your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions.

 

READ-A-THON is complete, but it is not too late to donate!  Donations can be made here until February 17th.  Thank you for logging your children's minutes and donating so many books!  The money raised will support purchasing a book for every child as part of our One School, One Book event in March. CP is amazing!

 

SPELLING BEE: Congratulations to the 18 3rd-5th graders who competed in Camino Pablo’s 13th Annual Spelling Bee!  It was obvious that each contestant spent hours preparing for this event. After over an hour and a half of competition two third graders, Nitin and Eric, were left standing. After several intense rounds Eric was crowned Camino Pablo Spelling Bee Champion for 2018. Eric will represent CP at the East Bay Times County Bee in late March. Thank you, Elena Angelo, for assisting in organizing this event!

 

PTA REFLECTIONS: Congratulations to CP's very own Pearce! His photography entry is advancing to the California state level of the Reflections Art Competition! Pearce's work will be considered for an Award of Excellence or an Award of Merit. We are so proud of you and all the CP Reflections participants!

PTA Bylaws Committee Member Needed: Each PTA in California is governed by bylaws based on the standard developed by the state organization.  The Camino Pablo PTA is reviewing its bylaws and is seeking PTA members interested in a position on the Bylaws Committee.  Bylaws should be reviewed annually and updated every three years by a Bylaws Committee of the association.  The President will appoint a Bylaws Committee of 3-5 members, chaired by our Parliamentarian.  Any current PTA members who are interested are encouraged to send an email to our Parliamentarian, Stephanie Becker.  Thank you!

Diablo Chapter. Look for collections boxes around school until 2/15/2018.

School Site Council (SSC) Camino Pablo Site Plan: The Camino Pablo School Site Council is made up of staff members and parents. The SSC is charged with monitoring and approving the Camino Pablo Site plan. Recently the SSC met and approved the 2018 Camino Pablo Site plan. The plan contains the following three goals that will be a focus for the next year:

  • Students will improve their reading comprehension and analysis
  • Students will improve their critical thinking through student discourse
  • Train Camino Pablo Staff, Students, and Parents on Site Emergency Plan

These were chosen based on student data. In February the Moraga School Board will vote to approve our Site Plan. I will be posting our site plan on the CP website and sharing at a future PTA meeting. Information about joining the 2018-2019 SSC will be shared in the spring.

 

Movie Night Thank You! A huge THANK YOU to Debbie Purcell and Courtney Johnson for organizing an amazing movie night! Over 80 CP students attended.  Another thank you to all of the other parents who helped make movie night happen.

Please help support this worthy organization with a book donation during the CP Read-a-thon!  Any new or gently used books are welcome.  Donation bins will be in the main hallway across from the office.

Staff Development Day: On Monday your students will be home while our teachers are collaborating and learning. The focus of Monday’s staff development is Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Teachers will be collaborating around:

GOODBYE AND WELCOME: One of our amazing reading tutors, Rebekah Triebsch, is retiring. Friday was her last day. Rebekah’s warmth and dedication to our students will be missed. Jenny Lallas will be our new reading tutor. Jenny has taught first grade in L.A. and New York. She is brining a lot of knowledge and passion to this position. Welcome Jenny.

 

Our reading tutors work with kindergarten through third grade students on improving their reading strategies and skills. Students are recommended for reading tutor based on classroom assessment results. 

 

This program is exists because of your contributions to the Moraga Education Foundation. If you have not donated to MEF it is never to late.

SPIRIT ASSEMBLY: On Wednesday we had our second spirit assembly of the year. At the assembly several 5th graders led the school in a CP spirit song, we watched Kid President talk about how good spreads. After watching the video I challenged the students to work each day to spread good and make CP a better place for everyone. We have continued these conversations during lunch by highlighting examples of how another student’s actions have made someone’s day better. We will continue these conversations when I hold classroom visits later this month. We ended the assembly with a video of our amazing second grade teachers doing the chicken dance...ask your students about it!

Please mark your calendars!  Chipotle will be partnering with CP for a fundraiser on Sunday, January 7th from 4-8pm at their Lafayette Location (a few doors down from Whole Foods).  Make sure to show the CP flyer in either hard copy or on your phone and/or tell the cashier you're there for a fundraiser before you pay so that CP receives credit.  Online orders and gift card purchases do not receive credit.  Make your Sunday night meal easy.  See you there!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION - FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES and BE SAFE: Let’s start 2018 by keeping our kids safe. Please remember to follow the traffic rules:

· Students MUST get out on the curbside only; NO EXCEPTIONS!

· STAY in your car

· ALWAYS pull as far forward in the loop as possible before stopping to allow your children to disembark.  Once they are out of the car, pull away as soon as it is safe to do so in order to make room for others behind you.

· When entering the loop, cars coming from opposite directions need to alternate, first one car from the north, then one from the south, etc.  Please observe this common courtesy so that cars from either direction have equal opportunity to get into the loop.

· Cars driving southbound on Camino Pablo (from JM, etc.) – please be aware of cars needing to exit the bus loop and cross to southbound Camino Pablo.  If you are in line, waiting to turn into the bus loop, please leave a space in the line for those cars that need to exit.

· The flow of traffic out to the street from the loop is as important as the flow into it.  If you are unable to turn left onto Camino Pablo due to the traffic, please turn right to keep the flow out of the loop going.

· Cars driving northbound on Camino Pablo (from Sanders Ranch, etc.) – respect and observe the crosswalk.  Do not block it in line, and always follow the directions of the crossing guard.

· Don’t plan play-dates, activities, review/complete homework while sitting in the Bus Loop.

 

Parking Lot:

· The parking lot is not for drop-off or pick-up.

· The parking lot is for staff parking or short-term visitor parking.  Please do not park in staff designated spaces, ever! Park in visitor spots only!  If there are no visitor spots, park on the street.  

· Please do not pull in and/or park in handicapped or reserved spaces unless entitled to do so.

· If you are staying on campus for a while, please consider parking on the street.  Remember, though – if you park across the street, set a good example and use one of the two crosswalks.  If you park on the school side of the street, walk north, across the driveways, and use the sidewalk onto campus – your children are told to do this, too—or use the walkway ramp from the sidewalk up to the middle of the parking lot.

· Please pay attention and exercise caution while driving through the walkway across the parking lot.  Our kids do use that crossing area and must be given the right of way.

· Please do not park in “no loading”, fire lane or crosswalk areas.  These designated areas must not be blocked.

 

SPELLING BEE: The Camino Pablo 3rd-5th Camino Pablo Spelling Bee is on February 9th at 8:30. Over the next two weeks each 3rd-5th class will hold a classroom bee. Each participating classroom puts forward two contestants and one alternate. The winner of the bee will move on to the county competition in March.

Moraga School District Elementary School Climate Survey: CP has over 120 responses to the Elementary Climate Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey it should only take a few minutes. Please take some time today to complete the survey. Survey link: HERE

 

PTA Reflections Winners: Congratulations to Tessa S. (K) for her Music Composition "I Wish" and Pearce R. (K) for his Photography "Small City” for advancing to the PTA's 32nd District competition between schools across Contra Costa County. Vivian W. (K) also received an LTCC Award of Merit for her photo "Flowers and Leaves."  We are proud of them!

 

Lockdown Drill: Every month we have an emergency drill. The main emergency situations we practice are: earthquake, fire, shelter in place, and lockdown. We will have a LOCKDOWN drill on Wednesday. During this drill I make the announcement over the PA that we are having a lockdown drill. I remind staff and students that this is only a drill. When the drill begins staff close blinds, lock doors, and turn off the lights. I walk around campus making sure doors are locked and blinds are closed. 

 

When students ask us why we have lockdown drills we tell them that they are safe at school, but in the very unlikely chance that there is a dangerous person on campus we practice staying safe.

 

Lost and Found: We have many items waiting to be found. Before winter break please search for any lost items in our lost and found. Items left in the lost and found after 12/15 will be donated to the Goodwill.

 

Friday 12/15/2016 Is a Minimum Day Schedule:

  • TK = all early - 8:25-11:50
  • 1st-5th = all early - 8:25-12:12

 

 

HELPING OTHERS

We need Cans!: Our canned food drive containers need filling. Please bring in some food for those who are in need. The containers are located in the office hallway. The canned food drive ends 12/15. Thank you to our student council for organizing this community service.

The Linus Project: Some our Girl Scouts are collecting used or new blankets that are in good condition that can be fixed up to donate to the Linus Project. The Linus Project donates blankets to kids under 18 that may not have a home or are in need of warm bedding or a comforting blanket.  They are focusing on the Northern California fire victims first and then to the local Mt. Diablo Chapter. Look for collections boxes around school next week.

 

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

The After School Enrichment Program (ASEP): This is a PTA program designed to offer Camino Pablo students a convenient way to enrich their education. 

  • ASEP EXPO: Join us on January 4th from 3:05-4:30 in the CP MUR. Kids and adults can check out the new class lineup, meet instructors, and get hands-on demos.
  • REGISTRATION: On-site (at the Expo by cash or check only), online, & mailed registration runs from January 4th through January 15th. Secure a spot by registering and paying early! Placement will be on a first come, first served basis until capacity is reached for each class.

Moraga School District Elementary School Climate Survey: Children learn best when they feel safe and secure at school. The MSD Elementary School Climate Survey annually provides an opportunity for parents to give important feedback to teachers and administrators about their child(ren)’s current school experience.  Survey information is used to monitor progress and develop future areas to improve upon via school plans and the District’s Local Control Accountability Plan.

 

This survey, which closes December ​14​, should take no more than 5 minutes to complete. Survey results will be posted on the MSD website by January 2, 2108.  Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this valuable information.

Emergency Backpacks: Thank you to our PTA volunteer Dolores Stratford for her hard work taking inventory and refilling our emergency backpacks. 

Attendance Improvement:  The learning in our classrooms can’t be replaced by independent study worksheets and reading. Last year as of this time of year CP students missed 163 days for Independent Study trips. This was more than twice the number at Rheem and Los Perales. This year we have reduced the number of independent studies to 66. Thank you for trying to schedule trips during non school days.

Online Parent Safety Night 11/28: K-8 parents, please join Lieutenant Brian South of the Moraga Police Department. Learn about some of the pitfalls and suggested practices to keep your child safe and smart online. On Nov. 28th, Officer South will be presenting to 7th and 8th graders at JM. Report Cards and Parent Conferences: Parent-teacher conferences will be held for all TK through 5th grade students next week on November 14, 16, and 17.  We have these days specially scheduled for this important opportunity to have a dialogue with your child’s teacher within the regular workday of the teacher. Here are some ““Tips for a Successful Parent Teacher Conference”.

 

Please Remember NOVEMBER 14, 16, and 17 are conference minimum days:

Moraga School District Cultural Proficiency Committee: The Cultural Proficiency Committee of the Moraga School District will be having its next meeting on Wednesday, November 15 at 7:00 pm in the JM library.  The meeting is open to the public.

 

The CPC is a committee charged with identifying Cultural Proficiency standards and developing plans to improve the Cultural Proficiency within the District.  The vision is to create a school climate of acceptance and respect so that all members of the school community enjoy equitable opportunities for professional and personal fulfillment.

 

The CPC also addresses and discusses “hot topics” in the District, including issues arising in the schools that challenge or conflict with the idea of embracing and valuing diversity and inclusion.

Reflections Art Competition Results! Congratulations to the CP student artists advancing to the Las Trampas Creek Council level of competition!  Yuhui Y., Vivian W., Jacob W., Giorgia S., Megan S., Matthew S., Tessa S., Wyatt S., Ryder S., Georgia S., Robbie S., Pearce R., Evelyn R., Caroline P., Oscar O., Talia M., Sejal M., Kaitlyn K., Luke H., Brian H., Noah G,. Erin C., Leah C., Kate B., and Owen A.  Great job, kids!

 

Their work will be on display at the LTCC Showcase on Saturday 12/2, 11am - 2pm at the Walnut Creek Intermediate Library and is open to the public. CP had a whopping 72 entries this year!  THANK YOU, Rebecca Ricksen, Cynthia Sugiyama, and Joy Rayner for all of your hard work running this program!

Thank you for the CP Book Fair: The book fair was a huge success. We sold lots of books, erasers, and light-up pens. A big thank you parent volunteers Lisa Brown and Elizabeth Kalpakjian. A special thank you to Joy Braitberg for hosting this event in the library.

Communication and Trust: In the age of digital communication and social media it is easy than ever to connect, comment, celebrate, and criticize. However, despite these forms of digital connection, personal communication and collaboration are what make a school community special. 

 

Please remember that our communications on social media are public and read by parents, teachers, and sometimes students. These postings and communications can have positive and negative impacts on our climate and culture. I can’t stress enough the importance of in person collaboration, connection, and problem solving when working together to support our students.

CP Book Fair Starts MONDAY: Our CP students LOVE the book fair. Here are a few tips for the book fair:

  • If you send your child with money make sure the money is in a labeled ziplock bag
  • Remind your child that there is no lending/sharing of money

 

Assembly: The Magic of Science!: The first of three PTA-sponsored assemblies this year is Wednesday, November 8th at 9:45 and 10:45am.  The presentation will be given by The Magic of Science.  Parents are invited to attend!  Thank you, Kim Watkins, for coordinating these fun and informative events!

Summer Reading Program Rewards: Congratulations to all of students who participated in the 2017 Summer Reading Program! On 11/2 reading certificates will be presented in classrooms to students in 1st-5th grade. Students will also receive credits toward the scholastic book fair, along with a free ice cream! Thank you to our parent volunteer Alison Appleby for organizing this program.

CP Hosting a Math Competition: We are pleased to tell you that your child is invited to participate in the Noetic Learning Math Contest (NLMC). NLMC is a national math contest given by Noetic Learning.  The purpose of the contest is to inspire young student interest in math and convey the message ‘It is COOL to be good at math!’ to students.  

Participation in this contest is completely optional.  The NLMC contest will take place on November 9 at 3:00 PM in the Camino Pablo Multi-Use Room. Students will be given 45 minutes to solve 20 math problems. Students should be done and ready to be picked up no later than 4:30 pm. The top 10% of students will be rewarded and the top 50% of students will be recognized on Noetic Learning’s web site.

Dear Parents,

The way your children are being taught to critically think and interact with text is vastly different than the reading groups many of us experienced when we were in school. Leslie Nash, an expert in Readers and Writers workshop, has worked with our teachers on the implementation of both the writing and reading program. The CPC is a committee charged with identifying Cultural Proficiency standards and developing plans to improve the Cultural Proficiency within the District.  The vision is to create a school climate of acceptance and respect so that all members of the school community enjoy equitable opportunities for professional and personal fulfillment.

The CPC also addresses and discusses “hot topics” in the District, including issues arising in the schools that challenge or conflict with the idea of embracing and valuing diversity and inclusion.

What are Teachers Doing on Monday? While your students are not it in school tomorrow teachers will be receiving professional development in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Much like our new literacy and math standards the new science standards focus on student engagement, understanding, and critical thinking. This year several teachers are piloting a new science curriculum based on these new standards.

Dear Parents,

 

Your generous donations to the Moraga Education Foundation (MEF) help to support and enrich our students school experiences. I witness the benefits of MEF donations every day. I see the teacher’s assistant kneeling by a second grader reviewing how to regroup numbers. I glimpse the joy of a third grade student showing me her self portrait in art class. I hear the giggle of a kindergarten student who was able to throw a frisbee for the first time during PE. I observe the sense of discovery when a group of first graders watch water turn to gas during Science Lab. I watch the new found savvy of a fifth grader who has programmed the 3D printer to make a keychain in Computer Lab. I see the joy of a first grade student when she checks out a book from the library. 

 

This year, MEF’s grant to our elementary schools is $925,000, funding critical staff and programs that benefit all students including: art teacher, counseling support, librarian, Lucy Calkins reading and writing programs, music, choir, and band teacher, teacher aides, and technology.

 

This Wednesday, October 4th, is MEF’s annual Day of Giving. Our goal this year is to raise 10% of our total in one day, or $220,000!  This will help the foundation gain momentum towards raising $2.2 million to support the students of Camino Pablo (as well as Los Perales and Rheem), JM and Campolindo High School. Please join me in showing your support of MEF by making a donation today, or during the day of giving by clicking here.

October is Bullying Prevention Month: October is National Bullying Prevention month. The Moraga School District and Camino Pablo are committed to providing a safe environment where all students feel safe to learn and play. Bullying is defined as: 

 

...unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. (www.stopbullying.gov

 

At Camino Pablo we have several programs and systems that proactively address this issue:

  • Moraga School District Lifeskills - A set of skills that frame what we strive to be at Camino Pablo. 
    • Staff hand out blue slips when they “catch” students exhibiting the Lifeskills
    • Staff address Lifeskills during teachable moments
  • Kids Connection - Provides a safe space for students in need to talk to a trusted adult about a wide variety of issues
  • Common Conflict Resolution Strategies/Vocabulary - A set of strategies and vocabulary that guide students on how to resolve conflict and stand up for what is right.
    • Taught and reviewed during classroom visits, lunchroom role plays, teachable moments, and reflection

 

As a community it is critical that we work together to create a safe environment where students can feel safe to learn how to resolve conflicts and stand up for what’s right.

Student Council Ice Cream Sales: Each Friday at the end of 2nd-5th grade lunch our student council sells ice cream. The money raised from sales is used by the student council to support CP. Last year the CP Student Council used the money from ice cream sales to purchase recess equipment. Ice cream is $2.

Emergency Preparedness: This past Monday we had our monthly emergency drill. This month we practiced a lockdown drill. Next month we will practice an earthquake drill that will include an evacuation. During these drills we make sure that students feel safe and understand it is a drill.

 

Each School site in the Moraga School District has a Site Emergency Plan. The plan guides our actions during emergency situations. Remembering 9/11: Many of us remember where we were 16 years ago today. My dad and stepmom live in Manhattan. I was on my way to teach my first graders when I heard the report on KCBS. The emotions of trying to call them and finally finding out they were okay, while mourning the many lives lost that day, will always be with me.

 

As a first grade teacher I was very careful  to provide a calm and consistent environment for my students on that day. Bringing up the attack and showing them my emotions would have been scary and confusing for them. If your children start asking questions here are some tips: Talking to kids about 9/11.

iKind: Tomorrow your child will receive an iKind pledge. If your child is willing to accept this pledge have them sign and return to the office.

 

What is iKind? I iKind is a cooperative project between the town of Moraga, the Moraga School District, and the Acalanes High School District. The vision of iKind is: “to promote civility and compassion in our community.”

 

The iKind mission is: “to promote kindness and courtesy, to foster courage and bravery, based on the belief that empathy and inclusion constitute the foundation on which community is built.”

 

IKind is sponsoring several events throughout the year. The first event will be a showing of the documentary “Right Footed” followed by a student discussion panel help at JM on 9/19 at 7:00.

HELP WANTED!

Teaching Assistant: We need a TA in one of our Kindergarten classes. The position is 4 days a week for 1.25 hours/day (5 hours a week). We could also use additional help at lunch yard duty which could add an addition 1-5 hours. If you are interested please let me know ASAP.

Every Day Counts: Last year we averaged a 97.2% daily attendance rate. One of our goals this year is to improve that percentage. Here are a few numbers to think about from 2016-2017:

  • Students missed 397 days due to Independent Study Contracts while on vacations that were 5 days or more 
  • Students missed 553 days that were unexcused. Most often these unexcused absences were due to vacations of less than 5 days

Yes, we do receive funding when parents fill out an independent study for a child who misses school for 5 or more days. However, school can’t be replicated by a packet. The complex conversations, projects, and group work that occur in the classroom are critical experiences. Please try and take vacations during non school days. We want all of our students at CP! Every day counts!

 

Assessments: During the first three weeks of school teachers are spending time building classroom communities, reviewing rules, and assessing each student. The assessments that we use are not for the purpose of giving a grade or labeling a child. Assessments help to guide teacher instruction. Students learn at different paces. Understanding where students are academically helps support differentiation and targeted instruction in our classrooms.

Red Line and Volunteer Reminders: Please remember that parents and guardians should not cross the red line by the playgrounds during drop-off and pick-up. This allows for a safer and more orderly drop-off and pick-up. This practice also helps with overall campus safety. If a staff person sees someone without a blue visitor badge they will either ask that person to go to the office to check in, or notify the office. During school hours all volunteers need to check-in at the office. Please remember that if you do volunteer you must be cleared through MSD volunteer clearance process.

 

Spirit Fridays: Each Friday will be a SPIRIT FRIDAY. Staff and students will show their school spirit by wearing CP spirit wear. Spirit wear can be purchased until 9/8. We will be kicking of Spirit Fridays with our first spirit assembly on Friday.

Common Conflict Resolution Strategies: This week I will be visiting each classroom and reviewing, and for some grades introducing, CP’s common conflict resolution strategies. The Lifeskills provide the descriptions of what we strive to be and these strategies layout the actions students and staff can take to make problems better. Every Day Counts: Our students attend school for 180 days. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require students to be involved in activities and projects that deeply engage them in literacy, math, and the content areas. These projects and activities can’t be re-created in make-up work or in the home environment. Studies show that students who miss an average two days a month can have difficulty meeting standards. EVERY DAY COUNTS!
