CP Open House and Art Show is THIS Thursday, May 25 from 7:00-8:00: This event is a celebration of student work. CP students are excited to show off evidence of their learning and our teachers are excited to have you visit. Make sure to visit the art show in the MUR. Our art teacher, Mrs. Larson, has brought out the inner artist in our students.

Please remember that Open House is not a time for a parent teacher conference or “interviewing” teachers from the next grade level. Our teachers will be busy celebrating the students learning.

Open House Day will be a minimum day for all students.  TK and Kindergarten students will be dismissed at 11:50 and 1st through 5th graders at 12:12.  There is no lunch served on minimum days

CP Olympics 6/7/2017 - Parent Help Needed: ​​We need volunteers for CP Olympics on Wednesday, June 7th from 8:30- 11:45am.  Some volunteers come for the whole day (this is the best for us), while others come for either the first half (8:15- 10:05) and some come for the second half (9:55- 11:45).  Events such as the Olympics couldn't occur without volunteers like you.  We are so lucky to have such a supportive community.

Music Performances THIS Friday 5/26: Sara Stafford, our music teacher, helps bring out the inner musician in our students.

2nd and 3rd Grades: Will have “informances” during each classroom’s scheduled music time. Parents are encouraged to attend. Your child’s teacher should have communicated the specific time of the event.

4th and 5th Grades: Will perform in the MUR from 2:00-3:00. We hope to see you there.

MSD Full Day Kindergarten: On April 13, 2017, the Moraga School District Governing Board approved a full-day kindergarten program, commencing the 2017-2018 school year.  The District is pleased to offer additional time for student learning, time for free-choice, play, exploration, social development, language development, singing, reading stories, small group work, outdoor activities, as well as more time for students to develop social-emotional behavioral skills, including self-regulation, attentiveness, self-confidence, and interpersonal skills.

2017-2018 kindergartners will follow the first grade early/late bird, parent conference and minimum day schedule.  School begins at 8:25 AM for early birds and ends at 1:55 PM.  School begins at 9:25 AM for late birds and ends at 3:05 PM.  All kindergartners will follow the early bird schedule the first three weeks of school as do first graders.  Recess, lunch and other schedules will be planned by each site’s principal and kindergarten staff.  

 

Reminder - 3rd Grade All Early Start Time

All Moraga School District 3rd grade students will again follow an 8:25 AM to 1:55 PM instructional schedule the first three weeks of school, August 21 through September 8.  Starting Monday, September 11, all 3rd grade students will begin the full-day schedule of 8:25 AM - 3:05 PM (1:50 PM on Wednesdays).

The three week early release period provides third grade teachers time to individually assess their student's reading and math levels to group students for instruction, evaluate a student's reading accuracy level, comprehension, and fluency, select texts that will be productive for instruction, and identify students who may be eligible for additional support.

3rd grade teachers will contact parents to schedule dates and times for individual student assessment appointments.​​​​​​​

PARKING WARNING! For THIS MONDAY: Both 4th and 5th grade will be leaving for overnight camp on Monday. Each grade will be taking two buses to camp. The buses will park on the school side of Camino Pablo. This will mean that there will be NO PARKING on Camino Pablo between the entrance to school and Dickenson. Please DO NOT park in staff spots. Thank you in advance for  your patience and understanding.

In Class Music Performance for TK, K, 1st THIS Wednesday: Sara Stafford, our music teacher, helps bring out the inner musician in our students. We hope you can see your child’s TK-1st music class in action the in class “info-formance” Your child’s teacher has communicated the specific time for your child’s class.

However, over the summer students move in and out of the district which can cause changes to our spring planning. Enrollment guides our decisions and enrollment is not final until August. 3rd-5th Grade CAASPP Testing Continues This Week: The CAASPP test assess students in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. The state uses the results of these tests as one factor in determining our progress as a school and district. Here is a link to the testing schedule. If a child is absent during a testing session he/she has to miss class time to make-up the missed session. Attendance on these days is important.

The 26th Annual Moraga Rotary Field Day will be held after school THIS Wednesday, May 10 at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School.  All 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are encouraged to participate and represent CP at this free and fun event.  Registration opens at 3:00 p.m. Medals will be awarded to the top three competitors in each event listed below:

Moraga Community Faire & Car Show Saturday May 13: The Moraga Community Faire & Car Show takes place on Saturday May 13 from 11 a.m.4 p.m. at the Rheem Valley Shopping Center and will feature a Kids Zone with pony rides, a climbing wall and a bounce house for just $5 per child as well as many free activities including classic cars, games, booths and live entertainment. Teacher Appreciation: The work our teachers do every day with your children matters. Their teaching is the most impactful part of a student’s school day. The confidence and concepts they help our students discover can be life changing. I believe that there is no other career that has as big an impact on the future of our society than teaching. I appreciate the art of what our teachers do. I hope you take this week of teacher appreciation to thank them for the dedication, heart, and thought they put into teaching our students each day!

Front Circle EARTH DAY Planting: We had lots of help planting and excavating the front circle area. In less than one day the area went from a rocky dirt pile to a beautiful native habitat. This was all made possible due to the generous time and expertise that  Laura Osteen has donated to this project. Thank you Laura, and thank you to all the CP families who helped.

 

Father Daughter Dance: Thank you Amy Johnson and all the parent volunteers who transformed the MUR into a spectacular circus themed ballroom. The father daughter dance is a great CP tradition and we are lucky to have amazing parents to help us carry on this tradition.

Class Placement: The CP team spends a lot of time working on classroom placement for next year. Our main goal when building classes is to create balanced classes. Balancing classes requires us to look at many variables such as: students that need extra support, academic progress, peer relationships, etc. I work on this process with each grade level twice in May. During this process we build balanced classes and I place each class with a specific teacher.

If you feel that your child has a unique situation or need that I need to be aware of during this careful placement process please send me an email by 4/28/2017. These requests should not be made through the teacher. Requests for a specific teacher will not be granted. Please know that your request will be considered within the larger context of balancing classes.

 

Patxi's Pizza will donate 10% of all sales to CP on Wednesday, April 26th!

A huge thank you to Patxi's Pizza in Lafayette, who as part of their "52-weeks of Giving" program will donate 10% of all sales to Camino Pablo on Wednesday, April 26th.

Our job is easy - the more pizza we eat, the more Patxi's will donate to CP!

All purchases are eligible, including dine-in, take-out, half-baked pies to bringhome, and delivery to local family or neighbors. Remember you don't have to be a CP family to order!

  • Driver must remain in vehicle while in the loop

  • Do not park in the numbered spots in the parking lot

PARENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! - Too Good For Drugs Program

Drug-awareness education is included in the 4th/5th grade Health Education Standards.  Traditionally, parents have taken an active role in presenting these lessons to students, in coordination with the classroom teacher.  Again this year, we need parent support!  

We are seeking parent volunteers to teach the Too Good for Drugs (TGFD) Curriculum in our 4th and 5th grade classrooms.    The curriculum is fully developed, including lesson plans and all materials.  You do not need to be a parent of a 4th or 5th grader to participate. Also, training is provided so that parents feel confident about presenting, along with management support from the classroom teacher. This is truly a great opportunity to get into the classrooms and support student leaning.  

The TGFD curriculum has been recently updated to include more games, interaction, and real-life problem-solving situations (social media, peer pressure, etc.) to make the lessons more engaging for students.  The curriculum consists of 8 – 10 lessons, delivered over approximately 2 weeks in individual classrooms.  

If you are interested in getting involved with CP’s TGFD program, please contact Principal Chris Reddam at creddam@moraga.k12.ca.us  by Tuesday, April 25.  A parent training will be scheduled for May 2nd, so that classroom lessons can be delivered during the month of May.

Thank you to Laura Osteen for working over spring break to start the beautification process. Our amazing custodians Alberto and Manuel also helped to put the very large boulders in place.

 

Lost and Found: The spring pattern of cool mornings and warmer afternoons has lead to many lost sweatshirts. Please stop by the lost and found if your child is missing sweatshirts, jackets, or other clothing items.

 

School Site Council (SSC) is looking for FOUR Parent Members - Deadline to EMAIL Mr. Reddam is 4/14/2017!

School Site Council (SSC) is made up of 7 parents and 7 teachers. The purpose of SSC is to help create, monitor, and approve the Camino Pablo Site Plan. The SSC has five meetings a year. Meetings are at CP and last from 3:15-4:30. This a great way to be involved in planning and goal setting that directly supports our amazing students. If we have more than four interested parents the SSC bylaws require an election. If you are interested in SSC please contact via email stating your interest no later than 4/14/2017.

 

CP PTA Needs You:

  • Committee Chairs: Grab a friend or two to coordinate the Hot Lunch Program, PTA's biggest fundraiser, together!  We also need someone to coordinate Assemblies, Library Volunteers, the Read-a-thon, and the Spelling Bee.

5th-12th Music Concerts: Come listen to our 5th graders make music! This week, 5th through 12th grade Moraga musicians from all three elementary schools, JM Intermediate School, and Campo High School will gather together to perform for the community.  All concerts are FREE and will be held at the Campolindo High School Performing Arts Center, beginning at 7:00 p.m.   Attend one or more as follows:

  • Tuesday, March 28 – Choir Night

  • Wednesday, March 29 – Strings Night

  • Thursday, March 30 – Band Night

 

Friday, March 31 = Minimum Day:

  • TK/K All Early - 8:25 to 11:50

Mother/Son Dodgeball Thank You! This was a fun night. Thank you to Stephanie and Matt Helder and all the other parent volunteers who helped make this a fun and safe event.

 

Math Competition: Did you know that on Thursday, March 16th, twenty Camino Pablo students competed in a math competition called Math Kangaroo. It was great to see so many students excited about math. Thank you to David Harrison and the other volunteers that helped make this competition happen. We plan to the host the competition again next year.

School Site Council (SSC) is made up of 7 parents and 7 teachers. The purpose of SSC is to help create, monitor, and approve the Camino Pablo Site Plan. The SSC has five meetings a year. Meetings are at CP and last from 3:15-4:30. This a great way to be involved in planning and goal setting that directly supports our amazing students. If we have more than four interested parents the SSC bylaws require an election. If you are interested in SSC please contact via email stating your interest no later than 4/14/2017.

One School, One Book Assemblies: Due to the multiple night events the last week of March we will not be having a family celebration for our One School, One Book program. However, we will holding an assembly to conclude our reading of the One and Only Ivan. During the assembly I will read the last section, we will have some discussion about the book, and watch some videos about the real Ivan. Parents are welcome to attend. The assemblies will be on Friday, March 31:

MEF 35th Anniversary Dinner: The official results will be announced soon, but the Moraga community came together Saturday night and raised a lot of money for our students. A huge thank you to all MEF volunteers who helped make this event come to life!

 

Thank You CP for Making the Read-a-thon a Success!

CP students are amazing readers!  We raised $8,524.60 for the Camino Pablo PTA.  These funds will support our One School, One Book program as well as many other PTA programs.  Special congratulations to the 4 classes that had 100% participation (Adler, Brown, Nixdorff, and Robinson).  

CP families also donated over 1000 books to Super Stars Literacy, an early literacy intervention program that supports at-risk early elementary students.  

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of Adrianne Spencer and Jennifer Burke.

Front Circle Landscaping

Notice some work being done at the entrance to our school?  We are excited to begin implementing our landscaping project to revise and beautify this area of the school.  Funds raised from last year's Read-a-thon were approved to implement this exciting project which broke ground over the weekend.  It is being headed by talented CP parent and landscaping professional, Laura Osteen.  This project will include large moss rock boulders, native and drought tolerant plants and a live oak tree all carefully selected to incorporate Moraga's natural rural habitat and provide low maintenance plants to add seasonal interest along with a habitat for native birds and butterfly.  We are hoping to make this a community project where students can help plant flowers and parents can gift their time and talents in a variety of areas.  We will also seek your input on a new school sign as the one we have is deteriorating.  Be on the lookout for additional updates and ways to help.

 

Moraga iKind Movie “Bully” - Attention Parents: Over 13 million American kids will be bullied this year, making it the most common form of violence experienced by young people in the nation. The documentary film BULLY, directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, brings human scale to this startling statistic, offering an intimate, unflinching look at how bullying has touched five kids and their families.  The Moraga iKind Project invites you to attend a special showing of the movie "Bully" on March 22, at 7:00 PM at the JM auditorium.  JM 8th grade students will share their school experiences with the audience following the movie.  JM Principal Joan Danilson and Superintendent Bruce Burns will also be present to answer questions. Odyssey of the Mind - Kinder Power!: Six CP students competed in the SF Bay Area Odyssey of the Mind 2017 Regional Tournament this past Saturday. The kids, and their parent coaches, worked so hard and came up with a wonderful solution to the Primary Division problem of "Movin' Out" and WON (a thirteen-way tie for) FIRST PLACE!!.

One School, One Book: Starting tomorrow, February 27, the entire CP community will be reading the same book for a program called One School, One Book. This book will be introduced to students at an assembly on 2/27. Each student will bring home his/her own copy (thank you PTA) and a reading calendar on this day. With this program we aim to build a community of readers. Everyone - students, parents, staff - will be participating.

Generally, you will be asked to read a "chapter" a night (about 15 minutes). This is meant to be a family read aloud experience. We will also put links to podcasts of each "chapter" in the school website. This is a fun way to listen to the "chapter" read by a CP staff member.

In school your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions. We hope you enjoy!

Invent It! FREE Family Game Night THIS Wednesday, March 1st, 6-7:45pm

CP's Family Game & Math Night is scheduled for Wed, March 1st, from 6-7:45pm in CP's Multi-Use Room. Bring the whole family for a fun night playing games, inventing new things and more.  This year's theme is "Invent It!",  brought to us by the Lawrence Hall of Science. Free to attend (sponsored by the PTA) & appropriate for all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult (no drop-offs, please).

CP SPELLING BEE 2017: On Friday CP held our annual 3rd-5th grade spelling bee. After over 15 rounds and 90 minutes fourth grader Clara H. was crowned the winner and Emilia B. was runner up. All 18 contestants and 9 alternates did a wonderful job representing their classes and working at home to studying words and strategy. Clara will go on to represent CP at the Contra Costa County Spelling Bee on March 27th at the Tice Valley Community Center. A special thank you to Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. Nixdorff for being judges and Angel Clifford and Tami Shaffer for being our parent volunteer spelling bee coordinators.

SUPPORT MORAGA’S ALL ACCESS PLAYGROUND: The Rotary Club of Moraga announced this week that it has reached 70% of its goal to raise just over $250,000 in donations for the new Lamorinda All-Access Playground.

The club has now raised $175,000 from the community, local corporations and foundations and its own club members since beginning the fundraising drive in early October.

 

“The response in favor of this All-Access Playground has been overwhelming,” said Rotary President Kevin Reneau. “It was an ambitious goal and a real stretch financially to undertake this project, but we have been really gratified to see the way everybody has stepped up to the plate for kids who have special needs and for all the children in our community.”

The project involves the design and construction of a 5,000 square foot playground in the Moraga Commons that will include 24 pieces of specialized recreational equipment on a rubberized surface that will allow those with special needs to play side-by-side with their family and friends, whether or not they have any physical challenges.  It is scheduled to be constructed this coming fall with a completion date set for September or October of 2017

 

Reneau said that the fundraising campaign will continue through the first half of 2017 and that it is important that the community raise the last third of the money needed to start the project on schedule.Donations can be made by writing a check to the Moraga Rotary Foundation and mailed to PO Box 122, Moraga, CA 94556 or by going to www.gofundme.com and using the search term “Lamorinda” to find the page where online donations can be made. All donations are tax deductible as the Rotary is a 501(c) (3) organization.

 

WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR CP PARENTS:

Coordinating Council: This long-standing MSD committee has evolved from reviewing supplemental district programs to developing and overseeing the implementation of the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan), the District’s road map to the future.  In other words, this committee decides the overarching direction and focus for our schools.

 

School Safety Committee: This committee has had a great influence state-wide on the way safety concerns (specifically child-abuse reporting) are handled at the school level.  Currently, the Safety Committee develops and monitors MSD’s Comprehensive Student Safety Plan, which includes issues such as emergency preparedness, digital citizenship and campus security.

 

Student Wellness:  This committee was established in the fall of 2016 and is charged with ensuring that schools are in compliance with our district’s “Wellness” board policy.  Anticipated work of this committee will include how we address the physical, social, and emotional health of our students.

WHAT ARE THE TEACHERS DOING TODAY?

All TK – 5th grade teachers will meet with MSD Writers’ Workshop Consultants in the morning to calibrate student writing. This work provides teachers a way to reflect on their instruction and differentiate their instruction based on student need.  

 

In the afternoon, teachers will choose from a menu of workshops presented by specialists on such topics as “Handwriting and Fine Motor Interventions” to “Assistive Technology Tools for Writers in the Classroom.”

Looking for a New Year’s Resolution that will make a difference for both your child and the entire school community?  Consider joining a district-level committee.  There are a variety of opportunities to lend your voice to make a long-lasting impact.  Parent input is needed on all of the following committees:

 

Cultural Proficiency Committee:  This new MSD committee will explore what it means to be a “culturally proficient school” and will outline our district’s strengths and areas for improvement in making sure our schools provide equal access to all students.  Actions will be developed to make sure students from all backgrounds feel included and valued.

 

Coordinating Council: This long-standing MSD committee has evolved from reviewing supplemental district programs to developing and overseeing the implementation of the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan), the District’s road map to the future.  In other words, this committee decides the overarching direction and focus for our schools.

 

School Safety Committee: This committee has had a great influence state-wide on the way safety concerns (specifically child-abuse reporting) are handled at the school level.  Currently, the Safety Committee develops and monitors MSD’s Comprehensive Student Safety Plan, which includes issues such as emergency preparedness, digital citizenship and campus security.

 

Student Wellness:  This committee was established in the fall of 2016 and is charged with ensuring that schools are in compliance with our district’s “Wellness” board policy.  Anticipated work of this committee will include how we address the physical, social, and emotional health of our students.

SPELLING BEE: The Camino Pablo 3rd-5th Camino Pablo Spelling Bee is on February 3rd at 8:30. Last week each 3rd-5th class held a classroom bee. Each participating classroom puts forward two contestants and one alternate. Between now and the bee there will be two Friday practice sessions during lunch and one dress rehearsal on January 27th. The winner of the bee will move on to the county competition in March.

 

CELEBRATE MORAGA EDUCATION FOUNDATION’S (MEF) BIRTHDAY!!: MEF is celebrating it’s 35th anniversary this year with an "Under the City Lights" Auction & Dinner Dance to be held at the Claremont on Saturday, March 11, 2017.  Tickets go on sale January 27. Flyers will come home with your child(ren) on Friday, January 20.  

FYI - MEF are still looking for auction donations.  If you, or anyone you know, would like to donate an item, please contact carolmcalpin@comcast.net.

Attendance EVERY DAY COUNTS!: The State, District, and Camino Pablo all share the goal of having a higher daily percentage of students at school. Every day, and child, counts! The learning that happens in the classroom can’t be replicated with make-up work.

 

An unexcused absence is when a child misses school for an entire day and is not ill. A child can be on an independent study when on a trip for 5 or more days. The state reimburses us for days missed on independent study, and those absences are excused. However, the issue remains that important learning was missed.

 

Here are few recent numbers from CP:

    • RH = 63

    • LP = 68

    • JM = 77

  • Absences at CP

    • Thursday 11/17 = 52 (13.3% of the school)

Drop Off Time Reminder: Please remember the following drop off times:

  • Early TK-2nd and all 3rd-5th = No earlier than 8:10

  • Late TK-2nd = No earlier than 9:25

There is no supervision before these times.

DIgital Citizenship Week: It’s Digital Citizenship Week! In our MSD community, we will be discussing how we can be kind online over the next few weeks. This week we will focus on what it means to be a good digital citizen. We are surveying our MSD community to find out our educational needs for students and parents. Please take a moment to complete our parent survey.

 

Classroom teachers will be sharing a brief video and discussion weekly. The videos are linked below in case you'd like to view too and be able to discuss at home.  Each week we will send you a tip sheet or other resource to help facilitate a conversation at home and extend your child’s learning. On Dec. 6, we will host a parent education night at JMIS for all K-8 parents, so mark your calendars.

Readers’ Workshop Parent Night: One of our goals this year is the implementation of our new Readers’ Workshop program. The goal of this program is to empower to students to love reading and become critical readers and thinkers. There is an important parent education night with more information about this exciting program.

When: Thursday, October 20 from 6:30-8:00

Where: JM Library

What: Learn about the components of the reader’s workshop model, review strategies to support reading at home, learn the benefits of a balanced reading program

Who: Leslie Nash from the West Coast Literacy Workshop

 

HALLOWEEN Halloween is one of CP’s grand traditions that is organized by our Student Council. Here are some reminders for this year’s parade.

  • Teachers will let you know, but most students arrive in costume (and bring a change for later in the day).

  • The parade will be out on the blacktop near Bobcat and will start around 9:45.

  • There are spots marked for classes to gather and other spots for parents. Please respect each other when finding a place to view.

  • Student Council awards prizes. This year’s categories are: Most Creative, Best School Spirit, Funniest, and Best Group.

  • No weapons. Make sure that costumes are school appropriate. NO CLOWN COSTUMES!!!

  • The parade ends with the 5th grade dance.

  • All parents who are in classrooms MUST have completed the MSD volunteer clearance, sign in at the office and visibly wear a volunteer badge.

 

EARTHQUAKE DRILL: On Thursday, Oct. 20, CP will participate in the Great California Shake Out. The purpose of the “ShakeOut” is to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes, so that we can be prepared in the event of the real thing!  Students and staff will practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” before evacuating the classrooms to the fields. Now would be the perfect time to review earthquake preparedness at home.  Please consider reviewing the “Seven Steps to Earthquake Safety” so that your family is well-prepared.

Lunch Recess Walking Club - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  We would like to start a lunch-recess walking club for students at CP. We would start with one day a week. This club would be run by two parent volunteers. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Task oriented activity

  • Can lead to social connections

Here are some of the logistics:

  • Parents mark laps on student tally cards

  • Students earn “feet” for finishing a specified number of laps

District Styrofoam Ban: At the last school board meeting a group of former JM ECO Club students, including several CP alumnae, made a presentation highlighting the negative impact of polystyrene on the environment. The former JM ECO Club members asked the Board to consider banning polystyrene. PTA Reflections Program is here. The deadline for student submissions in October 11. PTA REFLECTIONS is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the 2016-2017 theme: What is Your Story?

 

Students are invited to choreograph a dance, produce a film, write a poem or story, compose a song, take a picture, or create a piece of visual art inspired by the theme.  Students can use work created in class or outside of class as long as it is his/her own original effort and follows program guidelines.  Although the emphasis of this program is recognition, a selected group of submissions will move to the next level of judging and may ultimately end up at the state or national level.

Traffic Reminders:  Here are a few reminders about the traffic circle:

  • Please stay in your car. Have your child practice opening the door on the sidewalk side of the car.

  • Once you drop your child off please exit the circle...although it is tempting to watch how cute he/she is walking to class

  • The closer you arrive to 8:25 the more crowded the circle gets

 

9:15-9:25 Recess for 1st and 2nd Late Start: As of now we do not have any playground coverage from 9:15-9:25. 1st and 2nd grade late start students cannot be on the playground until the bell rings at 9:25. If we get a parent who is interested in being a yard duty he/she will need to go through the official hiring process (fingerprints and TB testing).

 

Readers’ Workshop Parent Night: One of our goals this year is the implementation of our new Readers’ Workshop program. The goal of this program is to empower to students to love reading and become critical readers and thinkers. There is an important parent education night with more information about this exciting program.

Every Day Counts: Our students attend school for 180 days. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) require students to be involved in activities and projects that deeply engage them in literacy, math, and the content areas. These projects and activities can’t be re-created in make-up work or in the home environment. Studies show that students who miss an average two days a month can have difficulty meeting standards. EVERY DAY COUNTS!

Dear Parents,

 

I am honored and excited to be principal of Camino Pablo Elementary. My wife Alissa and her sister Martha both went to CP, JM and Campo. My in laws live up the road on Shuey. Alissa and I have two children: Jack and Abby. Jack is about to start 6th grade at Walnut Creek intermediate and Abby will be starting her sophomore year at Acalanes. Alissa is a special education teacher at Stanley...our poor kids have teachers 24/7.

 

I spent my childhood in Massachusetts and New York. I moved to California when I was 16 and finished high school in Cupertino. I attended UC Davis. Swimming was my passion in high school and college. During college I taught swim lessons and after college I was head coach of several recreational swim teams in the Lafayette and Danville. Teaching swim lessons in high school and college led me to teaching.

 

After receiving my teaching credential from San Jose State I taught first grade at Burton Valley in Lafayette for 13 years. I spent two more years in Lafayette as an Assistant Principal/Special Education administrator. For the past 5 years I was principal of Parkmead Elementary in Walnut Creek.

 

I have been in education for 20 years because I love the positive impact the art of teaching can have in the life of a student. This positive impact only happens with trust and hard work from a team of parents, teachers, staff, and students. I am excited to be joining your team. I look forward to collaborating with you to make this year motivating, fun, engaging, and successful for your students.

Thank you for making my final years so enjoyable and fulfilling. Since coming to Moraga, I have had the opportunity to work with talented teachers, a wonderful office staff, delightful students and dedicated parents. “It takes a village” is often overused, but at the same time it is true.

            Also, a HUGE thanks for the generous gifts and hijacked spirit assembly last Friday. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Student Council lead the entire assembly with games, activities and valuable prizes. It was almost like I had planned it myself. This proves that copying is the highest form of flattery.

 

As I walk out the door for the last time, I have been reflecting on my 37 years in education. (Actually, I’ve been in school and following a bell schedule since I turned 5 years old.) I have learned some lessons along the way and thought I would pass some of them along to you.

  • Know which hill to die on. Not everything is of equal importance. Things that seem big today will be minor by tomorrow.
  • Children keep us young at heart. The sound of children’s laughter and voices involved in play is a gift. It reminds me to cherish the moments and see the world through the eyes of a child.
  • We have 2 ears and only 1 mouth for a reason- listen. I have started many a conversation with a child with a strong notion of what the outcome would be. However, by asking the right questions, really listening, and asking clarifying questions I have come to new conclusions.
  • Make people feel welcome. A hello and a smile go a long way in determining how people will experience the day. (I think I could apply for to be a “greeter at the door” at Walmart.)
  • Build Community. Everyone wants to belong and it’s our job to be inclusive and welcoming.
  • Celebrate the small things. Each day has at least one thing that can be cheered and celebrated. We all need encouragement. Not just toward goals, but for the mini-steps along the way.
  • Don’t use the words always and never- when arguing. “You never clean up after yourself” does nothing to forward the conversation and ends up polarizing people. (This is also a good one for couples.)

 

I ended last week’s assembly with a verse from the song Everything Possible by the Flirtations. It’s a lullaby. Here is the first verse:

 

You can be anybody that you want to be

You can love whomever you will

You can travel any country where your heart leads

And know I will love you still

You can live by yourself

You can gather friends around

You can choose one special one

But the only measure of your words and your deeds

Will be the love you leave behind when you’re gone.

Wow! Friday was pretty incredible. The Spirit Assembly was hijacked and turned over to the Student Council. They led a GREAT retirement assembly for me with games and prizes. The activities were perfect and fit me to a T.  Afterwards, I was whisked away to lunch and was unable to return to work. That sort of explains why this weekly email is late.

The 2016 Summer Reading Program is just around the corner! Teachers will send home student summer reading logs this week. Have your child keep the log in a safe place. By reading over the summer and completing the reading log, students will win prizes in the fall! Prizes include an ice cream ticket and $5 gift certificate for the Scholastic Book Fair, or $10 for 2nd-6th graders who read from multiple categories (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, historical fiction, and biography). We'll again be partnering with Republic Services to collect school supplies for Title 1 schools in our county. Please consider donating spiral notebooks, pencils, crayons (even broken), rulers, markers, paper, backpacks, lunch boxes, scissors, folders, spiral binders, art & craft supplies, chapter and picture books, and sports equipment. Carts will arrive June 2nd and will be picked June 14th

 

CP Garden Needs Help In Summer! Welcome to one of the busiest seasons in the CP garden! If you and your child are interested in owning a week this summer to water, weed, and harvest please email julianadamon@gmail.com. We will have zucchini, tomatoes, honeysuckle, onions, potatoes, cosmos, sunflowers, and beans. We are trying out cucumbers and blueberries too and need help coaxing pumpkins for next fall.

This morning parents in grades 2 and 3 got to visit their child’s music classes to see the work done with our Music For Minors teachers. Then this afternoon we were treated to the 4th and 5th grade end of the year concerts. Wow! It was like 7 mini-concerts all at one time- with the 4th then 5th grade strings, the 4th then 5th grade band, the 4th then 5th grade chorus, and the afterschool bucket drumming. Your MEF donations DO matter.

Another GREAT CP event was last night with our Open House. It is fun to watch the children be your tour guide and show pride in their hard work this year. I always find this time of year to be a great time to reflect on the growth our young learners have made over the course of the year. Amazing growth over time is evident when you compare work from the start of the year to the end. Please join me in celebrating your children, their hard work, and great growth.

 

MEF is everywhere in enriching your child’s educational experience. I am always in awe of the art display in the MUR for Open House. The wide variety of art (landscapes, animals, still life, mosaics) and art medium (watercolors, oil pastels, chalk) never ceases to amaze me. Thank you MEF for enriching our children’s lives. It’s not too late to make your donation to MEF this year.

 

I am so proud of our CP students working together to achieve great things. The results are back from the Rotary Field Day for grades 3-5, and CP had a great showing! These results are for all schools and classes across the Moraga School District

Thank you for another great staff luncheon provided by PTA. These events make us all feel loved and appreciated. Thank you.

 

Moving Forward into next year, I am happy to announce that CP’s new principal will be Chris Reddam. The final step occurred at Tuesday night’s board meeting where the board unanimously approved his hiring. Chris has endured a rigorous interview process that included many parents, staff, and activities. Most recently he has been the principal of Park Mead School in Walnut Creek. (You should have received an email from the District Office Wednesday with this announcement.)

            I am happy to be leaving the educational leadership of CP in such capable hands. I know that you will welcome him into the CP community the same way that you did for me.

            Chris and I will be meeting to ensure a smooth transition.

           

Enrollment for next year is being planned. Please contact the office if you know that you will NOT be returning next year.

 

Reinforcing the LifeSkills at home helps to cement these traits in our children. Here are some quick ideas of what the LifeSkills can look like in the home environment.

Responsibility: To respond when appropriate, to be accountable for your actions

Looks like:

-           Seek lifelong interests and hobbies.

-           Commit to improving their skill, knowledge, and behavior.

-           Return borrowed items to people or to their agreed upon places.

-           Replace torn or lost library books.

-           Accept responsibility for their negative actions.

-           Stand up for others who have been rudely or unfairly treated.

Organization: To plan, arrange and implement in an orderly way

Looks like:

-           Maintain clutter-free desks.

-           Show up for special activities according to schedule.

-           Remember library books, tennis shoes, and instruments on scheduled days.

-           Find work when needed.

-           Turn in work on or before due date.
